Robert David “Dave” Grusin (born June 26, 1934) is an American
composer, arranger and pianist. Grusin has composed many scores
for feature films and television, and has won numerous awards for
his soundtrack and record work, including an Academy award and 12
Grammys. He has had a prolific recording career as an artist,
arranger, producer and executive producer.
Born in Littleton, Colorado, he studied music at the University of
Colorado at Boulder and was awarded his bachelor’s degree in 1956.
He produced his first single, “Subways are for Sleeping” in 1962
and his first film score was for Divorce American Style (1967).
Other scores followed including Winning (1969), The Friends of
Eddie Coyle (1973), The Midnight Man (1974) and Three Days of the
Condor in 1975.

Collection is a fine 11-track overview of Dave Grusin’s GRP
output, featuring both solo and soundtrack recordings, such as
“She Could Be Mine,” “Thankful ‘n Thoughtful,” “River Song,”
“Actor’s Life,” “St. Elsewhere,” “Serengeti Walk,” “Early A.M.
Attitude,” “Bossa Baroque” and “On Golden Pond.” Collectors will
already have all this material, but neophytes will find this disc
to be a useful introduction to Grusin.

The title of this compilation, All-Time Greatest Hits, is
misleading. That’s no disrespect to the material here, which is
mostly very good. It’s just not Louis Armstrong’s all-time
greatest. These 18 tracks come from Armstrong’s “pop” era, the
final decades of his career where, under the tutelage of producer
Milt Gabler and arranger Gordon Jenkins, the jazz pioneer moved
full-bore into a genial form of heavily orchestrated pop music.
The Armstrong of this era, a large, bear-like man with an
infectious laugh and a gravelly voice, immaculately dressed in a
crisp suit with a white linen handkerchief in one hand and a
rarely played trumpet in the other, has become the iconic image of
the man, which unfairly relegates his best, most passionate and
most influential work to the background. “What a Wonderful World,”
“Hello Dolly,” “A Kiss to Build a Dream On,” and “When You’re
Smiling” are masterful pop songs, and this well-annotated,
perfectly remastered set does them justice. But when a compilation
calls itself Louis Armstrong’s All-Time Greatest Hits yet doesn’t
include “Dippermouth Blues,” “Yes! I’m in the Barrel,” or
“Struttin’ With Some Barbecue,” just to name a few, it’s difficult
to agree with the name.

In August of 2012 I backpacked from north to south across the
Wallowa Mountains with my son Carson and my nephew Tim Binford.
It was a trip I had wanted to make for years.

The Wallowa Mountains, an outlier of the Rockies in Northeast
Oregon, are home territory for me. My parents came from small
ranching communities on the south side, and I’ve been exploring
the range since I was a boy: hiking, fishing and hunting, working
on trails and climbing peaks.

I had been up most of the drainages and across many of the passes
on previous trips, but crossing the entire range was a different
experience. There were new passes to cross and places I had never
seen, but more importantly, it gave a sense of the mountains as a
whole, as a unique entity with its own character and logic,
changing through time and the seasons. Some of the photos from
our trip are on the album jacket.

The music on this recording was also a new experience. Most of
the compositions were written in 2012 and I was trying to explore
some new musical territory, both for myself and for the band.
Some of the compositions are challenging, with lots of meter
changes and contrasting sections. Others combine diverse
stylistic elements in ways that are new for us.

Michael, Clyde, Carson and I have been playing together regularly
for a number of years now and over that time the group has
evolved a certain voice. Michael plays very compositionally and
often brings a bit of humor to the proceedings. Clyde connects
things and creates pivots that focus the music in new directions.
Carson provides fire, drive and counterpoint, but always in the
context of making the music work as a whole. When we perform,
everyone puts the music first. I feel lucky to be able to play
with these guys.

Our music is strongly rooted in the jazz tradition of telling a
story. And we are always extending that tradition, trying to find
new ways to work with the core elements to spontaneously create
music that is both exciting and rewarding for us as well as our
listeners. Here are some new stories we hope you will enjoy.

Gino Vannelli (born June 16, 1952) is a Canadian singer,
songwriter, musician and composer.

Ranging from soul to soft rock, singer and songwriter Gino
Vannelli earned several hits during the 1970s, including “People
Gotta Move” and “I Just Wanna Stop.” Vannelli learned to play the
drums early in life and studied music theory at McGill University.
He formed an R&B band with two brothers, but later began recording
solo material for RCA in 1970. He became popular four years later
when A&M released his hit single “People Gotta Move,” from the
Powerful People album (retitled People Gotta Move). Many albums
followed, including Storm at Sunup (1975), Gist of the Gemini
(1976), A Pauper in Paradise (1977), Brother to Brother (1978),
Nightwalker (1981), Black Cars (1985), Big Dreamers Never Sleep
(1987), Inconsolable Man (1990), and Live in Montreal (1992).
After a lengthy absence from the recording studio, Vannelli
returned in 1995 with Yonder Tree; Slow Love followed three years
later. After yet another lengthy absence from the studio, Gino
recorded the ambitious Canto in 2003 and 2006′s These Are the
Days, which featured remastered recordings of some of his best-
known work alongside seven new compositions. A Good Thing,
featuring a CD and accompanying book of poetry, was issued in
early 2009, followed by another CD-book package, Stardust in the
Sand, later that same year.
