Jazz drummer Jimmy Cobb is perhaps most famous for his role as the backbone to Miles Davis’s best albums, but the unstoppable Cobb is also an excellent band leader in his own right, as evidenced in his latest release for Chesky Records, Cobb’s Corner. This recording captures the Jimmy Cobb that jazz listeners who’ve followed his long, gratifying career expect. Cobb’s Corner finds Jimmy filling out his rhythm section with legendary New York pianist Ronnie Mathews and renowned bassist Peter Washington. The chief soloist on the record is Roy Hargrove, perhaps the most versatile and surefire trumpeter to emerge in the wake of Wynton Marsalis. The musician’s fortright embrace of American standards, their personal interpretations of delectable melodies and their collective, highly interactive improvisations make this a must have for any jazz aficionado. This super audio compact disc was recorded using Chesky’s state of the art minimalist miking techniques to create an outstanding addition to any audiophiles collection.

Hargrove has a wonderfully rich tone and is able to stretch out some very creative solos during the generally laid-back tempi of many of the tracks. Chesky records in natural halls and churches rather than studios. The acoustic ambiance of the venue is the real thing – not digital reverb. None of the instruments are therefore recorded with close-up mics, not even the drums as nearly everyone else seems to do. The drums also don’t overpower the other players as heard on so many jazz recordings – of course at least part of that has to be blamed on the artfulness of Cobb’s drumming. – John Henry

The Good Life is the debut album on Sony Masterworks from renowned jazz trumpeter, Till Brönner, Germany’s best known and best-selling jazz artist. The album is conceived for relaxed moments and draws inspiration form the great American jazz songbook, including new arrangements of works made famous by Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole and many more. Along with his masterful trumpet playing, The Good Life also features Brönner singing on eight of the tracks and includes two original songs written by the 2-time Grammy nominee. Featuring an all-star band John Clayton/bass, Anthony Wilson/guitar, Larry Goldings/piano and Jeff Hamilton/drums The Good Life is an intimate, pared-down, back-to-basics tour de force and testimony to the unique power of jazz to amplify and enrich the most beautiful and poignant moments of our lives.

The Good Life marks the trumpeter and vocalist’s return to straight-ahead jazz after a self-titled outing that paid homage to CTI in 2012, and 2014’s Movie Album, which treated film themes as contemporary jazz numbers. This 13-song set contains 11 standards and two originals. Brönner surrounded himself with a crack band of sidemen – pianist Larry Goldings, guitarist Anthony Wilson, bassist John Clayton, and drummer Jeff Hamilton – at the legendary Ocean Way studio in Los Angeles with Dutch producer Ruud Jacobs. The vibe throughout is airy, thoughtful, and relaxed (the album’s subtitle is “Music for Peaceful Moments”); the charts are direct but not lightweight. The opener is a reading of Sasha Distel’s and Jack Reardon’s title track that reveals his gentle, warm horn in the melody atop a lithe, brushed drum kit groove accentuated by Clayton’s walking bassline, liquid fills from Wilson, and Goldings’ intimate accents. In his most authoritative vocal performances on record, Brönner still directly references Chet Baker’s singing, but the phrasing nuances of Michael Franks and Bob Dorough are reflected in his delivery of the breezy yet swinging renditions of “Come Dance with Me,” the bossa-tinged interpretation of Irving Berlin’s “Change Partners,” and the straight-up fingerpopping “I May Be Wrong”– with a choice solo by Wilson. On his own “O Que Resta” (an instrumental) Brönner frames his own lyrical playing in the long shadow cast by Miles Davis during his Gil Evans period. Goldings’ break is close, humid, and gorgeous. “I’ll Be Seeing You” is an iconic Billie Holiday number. Brönner even sings until the midway point – long after the band establishes a lithe, loping groove, and he delivers a fine flügelhorn solo. When he begins to vocalize, the focus has shifted and it’s a clever addendum. More ambitious is the read of “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” inseparably associated with Frank Sinatra. The band’s collective harmony establishes it as a nocturnal nursery rhyme. Clayton’s illustrative bassline is carefully colored by Wilson as brushed snare and sparse, shimmering piano chords hold the frame. Brönner employs a halting, yet utterly lyrical vocal, delivering an utterly unique take that doesn’t even reflect on Sinatra’s. The only thing that doesn’t hold up here is the leader’s “Her Smile.” The calypso-cum-samba hybrid is hip, but the lyric is trite compared to everything else. That’s a minor complaint, though. This is a romantic and “light” record for sure, and it’s one that shows Brönner’s assuredness in reinterpreting the repertoire with grace and sophistication.

The Polish composer and clarinetist Wacław Zimpel is a musical chameleon. After graduating from a Warsaw conservatory, he traded the rigors of classical music for the improvisational thrills of free jazz. His newest project is LAM. In this trio – which includes also Krzysztof Dys on piano and Hubert Zemler on drums – the main inspiration is the work of American minimalists.

“LAM” is a debut album from a trio of improvising musicians led by Wacław Zimpel.
“Ever since Hera disbanded I haven’t had a working band”, says Zimpel. “There were only international ensembles that I could play with on the occasions and that’s how LAM came into life. I invited musicians that have similar backgrounds to mine – we all studied classical composition, we played jazz and later on opened up to other genres. Thanks to this we have a common understanding of music. The name was suggested by my wife Sara”, he adds. Musicians mentioned by Zimpel are: pianist Krzysztof Dys and drummer and percussionist Hubert Zemler (Slalom, Horny Trees).

Compositions that ended up on “LAM” are somewhat older that those from Zimpel’s first solo album “Lines”, released by Instant Classic in early 2016. “LAM makes use of longer forms that are common in trance music”, explains Zimpel. “But this time post-production was even more important, visibly overshadowing minimalism as a major inspiration. I am currently planning LAM’s next incarnation that will make more use of sounds created by my producer mooryc.”

Although crafted with a special attention to details, LAM’s album has its roots in improvised sessions that trio held before entering the studio. “I recorded those meetings with an intention to eliminate potential flows. Complete compositions appeared only after we met in the studio”, recalls Wacław. “Overall, we spent three days at Tonn Studio located in Łódź. It’s my favourite one, a very inspiring spot where you can concentrate on your work without any distractions. Most of the tracks were laid directly to tape and then found their way to mooryc’s studio where he added electronics.”

“mooryc suggested a different approach to our music and so they gained both depth and new spaces that we couldn’t reach before. Based on this we decided to alter the track-listing, dividing compositions into smaller entities that facilitate listening experience”, adds Zimpel.

The Heart Of The Matter is the eleventh studio album from critically-acclaimed GRAMMY®-nominated vocalist Jane Monheit. This stunning recording pays homage to great songwriters and voices from a variety of musical genres. Singer-pianist Kandace Springs debut Soul Eyes was produced by Grammy-winner Larry Klein (Lizz Wright, Melody Gardot, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock). It s an album of soul & pop that channels her jazz influences (Norah Jones, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone) & her Nashville upbringing. Guests include trumpeter Terence Blanchard & guitarist-songwriter Jesse Harris. Her EP landed her on Letterman, Kimmel, Fallon, Bonnaroo & made fans like Prince. She supported Gregory Porter on his massive UK tour.

Kandace Springs’ career started rolling when her father, session vocalist Scat Springs, handed a demo to Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken. Industry veterans of 30-plus years, from Shannon to Rihanna, the duo signed her to their production company, which led to an audition for Blue Note president Don Was. The Nashville native sang “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” popularized by Bonnie Raitt, whose recording just happened to be co-produced with Was. Blue Note deal secured, she uploaded a cover of Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me” that prompted Prince to have her play at Paisley Park during the 30th anniversary celebration of Purple Rain. Springs made her recorded debut a couple months later. Co-written with the likes of Rogers, Sturken, and Pop & Oak, the self-titled EP of hip-hop soul primed her for placement in a class with similarly classic-meets-contemporary artists like Jazmine Sullivan and Elle Varner. It left Springs feeling that her sound should instead reflect her early jazz influences with stripped-down live instrumentation – a view shared by continued supporter Prince. Soul Eyes achieves that objective. Produced by Larry Klein with a constant rhythm section of Vinnie Colaiuta and Dan Lutz – with additional instrumentation from the likes of Dean Parks, Pete Kuzma, and Terence Blanchard – it’s all shaped to place Springs front and center. The approach is emphasized by the title song, a sensitive update of Mal Waldron’s 60-year-old standard that showcases Springs’ measured piano playing as much as it does her lithe, lightly fiery voice. Apart from that and a loose but succinct version of War’s “The World Is a Ghetto” – the second-oldest composition – the reinterpreted songs are relatively modern, highlighted by Shelby Lynne’s “Thought It Would Be Easier.” Springs co-wrote three cuts, the best and most energetic of which is easily “Novocaine Heart.” Due to its neatly serpentine groove and inquisitive, positive outlook, lovers of late-’70s/early-’80s crossover jazz could easily be forgiven for thinking it was first waxed by Judy Roberts or Googie & Tom Coppola. The album closes with the lone song Springs wrote by herself, a striking piano ballad. As natural as the album feels, Springs seems eager to impress her elders and stay true to her inspirations, rather than build from them – like she’s bottling some of her energy and individuality. Less straight-ahead, more distinctive releases are hopefully in her future.

The Golden voice of Norway:
Norwegian born singer and songwriter Kari Bremnes was born in 1956 in Lofoten. Her career as a performer was delayed by her desire to finish university (she earned a Master’s Degree) and a short stint as a journalist. Eventually, the call of the stage won out, and in 1987 she released her first album, Mitt Ville Hjerte. From there, Bremnes went on to release more than ten full-lengths over the next 20 years, as well as a number of successful — in Norway and in other European nations — singles.

Country music icon Kenny Rogers offers up his first Christmas collection since 1998’s Christmas from the Heart. After four ECM recordings with his other band Ronin, Bartsch presents this new album featuring Mobile augmented on three pieces by a string quintet. Textures from jazz, funk, new music, minimal as well as ritual and sacred music are organically interwoven with Bartsch and his partners aiming for an energetic total group sound rather than displays of soloistic virtuosity.

Swiss pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch and his band Ronin grabbed the attention of the international jazz world with four acclaimed ECM recordings between 2006 and 2012. The group’s trademark sound lies in minimal, interlocking, contrapuntal, polyrhythmic grooves that Bärtsch defines as “zen funk,” played on piano, percussion, and electric bass. It is not only listenable, but actually danceable. But Ronin’s roots lie in Mobile, an earlier Bärtsch ensemble that cut two albums – Ritual Groove Music in 2004 and Aer in 2006 – before this one. The composer’s approach to rhythm, skeletal harmony, counterpoint, and repetition is different but holistic – everywhere evident in both. The pianist’s Mobile features bassist Kaspar Rast (on acoustic upright), and reed multi-instrumentalist Sha (both Ronin regulars), as well as percussionist Nicholas Stocker. Sha plays clarinets exclusively. His function, in direct contrast to his frontline role in Ronin, is as a tonal center and rhythmic collaborator. The music on Continuum is more deliberate, ritualistic – it’s still anchored in grooves but they’re less obvious. The discipline of this band is legendary in Switzerland: its earliest incarnation could perform Bärtsch’s hypnotic compositions for 36 hours straight.

The album offers revisionings of six pieces from his and Ronin’s catalogs, and two new works. Articulating his ongoing obsession with late 20th century classical composition, Bärtsch also scripted a string quartet into three pieces. “Modul 18” contains brushed snare, tuned percussion, and strident basslines to create a dark vibe. The piano, strings, and percussion introduce various low-end modes in a trance-inducing groove. “Modul 8_11” has its funk entrenched in a bass clarinet pulse that acts as a second bassline. Bärtsch offers a linear chordal statement, while shades and colors are added and subtracted almost imperceptibly. Stocker’s percussion extends their parameters and the bassline bridges them. The brooding jazz in “Modul 12” is spacier, utilizing softly brushed snares, round-toned cymbals, kalimbas, and occasional piano chords as tonal centers for the rhythms. “Modul 5” contains sharply contrasting contrapuntal statements. They arrive in rounds through the piano’s lower middle and high registers. Rast contributes limited modal phrases, while fleet, tapping, high-tuned percussion deceptively offers the impression of a second piano. Though the cycle repeats continually, the music changes constantly. “Modul 44,” with strings, is the most gradual piece here. Stocker plays solo for nearly a minute before piano and strings enter; three more pass before they commence playing in ascendant and descendant cycles, accompanied by snare. When the bass and bass clarinet finally enter, the composition’s tension, pulse, and tonal variation have already increased in dimension. Here, Mobile’s music may appear more static than Ronin’s. But that’s deceptive. Continuum is European jazz rife with funkiness; it’s just more specific sound. It may require a closer listen, at least initially, but once experienced, its depth and constancy are unmistakable.

Singer/pianist Diana Krall breaks new ground interpreting modern standards by Tom Waits, Mose Allison, and Joni Mitchell, as well as compositions by herself and new husband, Elvis Costello. Krall’s piano-jazz cred comes through loudly and clearly on her Count Basie-styled version of the Bonnie Raitt staple “Love Me Like a Man” (written by folk-bluesman Chris Smither). But it’s the collaborations with her spouse that unearth untapped emotional nuances of her velvet voice; many are reminiscent of Bill Evans’s moody, impressionistic pieces. The title track, “Narrow Daylight,” “Abandoned Masquerade,” and “I’m Coming Through” all deal with love and loss. “Departure Bay,” a picturesque ode to her hometown of Nanaimo, B.C., proves that this is the start of something big, and that two heads–and hearts–are better than one.

While the jazz fascists (read: purists) may be screaming “sellout” because Diana Krall decided to record something other than standards this time out, the rest of us can enjoy the considerable fruit of her labors. The Girl in the Other Room is, without question, a jazz record in the same manner her other outings are. The fact that it isn’t made up of musty and dusty “classics” may irk the narrow-minded and reactionary, but it doesn’t change the fact that this bold recording is a jazz record made with care, creativity, and a wonderfully intimate aesthetic fueling its 12 songs. Produced by Tommy LiPuma and Krall, the non-original material ranges from the Mississippi-fueled jazzed-up blues of Mose Allison’s “Stop This World” to contemporary songs that are reinvented in Krall’s image by Tom Waits (“Temptation”), Joni Mitchell (“Black Crow”), Chris Smither (“Love Me Like a Man”), and her husband, Elvis Costello (“Almost Blue”). These covers are striking. Krall’s read of Allison’s tune rivals his and adds an entirely different shade of meaning, as does her swinging, jazzy, R&B-infused take on Smither’s sexy nugget via its first hitmaker, Bonnie Raitt. Her interpretation of Waits’ “Temptation” is far more sultry than Holly Cole’s because Krall understands this pop song to be a jazz tune rather than a jazzy pop song. “Black Crow” exists in its own space in the terrain of the album, because Krall understands that jazz is not mere articulation but interpretation. Likewise, her reverent version of Costello’s “Almost Blue” takes it out of its original countrypolitan setting and brings it back to the blues.

As wonderful as these songs are, however, they serve a utilitarian purpose; they act as bridges to the startling, emotionally charged poetics in the material Krall has composed with Costello. Totaling half the album, this material is full of grief, darkness, and a tentative re-emergence from the shadows. It begins in the noir-ish melancholy of the title track, kissed with bittersweet agony by Gershwin’s “Summertime.” The grain in Krall’s pained voice relates an edgy third-person tale that is harrowing in its lack of revelation and in the way it confounds the listener; it features John Clayton on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums. In “I’ve Changed My Address,” Krall evokes the voices of ghosts such as Louis Armstrong and Anita O’Day in a sturdy hip vernacular that channels the early beat jazz of Waits and Allison. The lyric is solid and wonderfully evocative not only of time and place, but of emotional terrain. Krall’s solo in the tune is stunning. “Narrow Daylight,” graced by gospel overtones, is a tentative step into hope with its opening line: “Narrow daylight enters the room, winter is over, summer is near.” This glimmer of hope is short-lived, however, as “Abandoned Masquerade” reveals the shattered promise in the aftermath of dying love. “I’m Coming Through” and “Departure Bay,” which close the set, are both underscored by the grief experienced at the loss of Krall’s mother. They are far from sentimental, nor are they sophomoric, but through the eloquence of Krall’s wonderfully sophisticated melodic architecture and rhythmic parlance they express the experience of longing, of death, and of acceptance. The former features a beautiful solo by guitarist Anthony Wilson and the latter, in its starkness, offers memory as reflection and instruction. This is a bold new direction by an artist who expresses great willingness to get dirt on her hands and to offer its traces and smudges as part and parcel of her own part in extending the jazz tradition, through confessional language and a wonderfully inventive application that is caressed by, not saturated in, elegant pop.

The Look of Love doesn’t tamper with Diana Krall’s ongoing success, continuing the emphasis on romantic ballads and embracing them with lush string arrangements. At the core, of course, is Krall’s voice. She’s developing into one of the great torch singers, with an approach that’s both direct and subtly nuanced, true to the song and yet deeply personal.

Diana Krall has a good voice and plays decent piano, but this somewhat ridiculously packaged Verve CD seems like an obvious attempt to turn her into a pop icon, and sex symbol to boot. The bland arrangements by Claus Ogerman (who conducts the London Symphony Orchestra or the Los Angeles Session Orchestra on each track) border on easy listening, while Krall and her various supporting musicians, including John Pisano, Russell Malone, Christian McBride, and Peter Erskine (among others), clearly seem stifled by their respective roles. There are plenty of strong compositions here, including standards like “I Remember You,” “The Night We Called It a Day,” and “I Get Along Without You Very Well,” but the unimaginative and often syrupy charts take their toll on the performances. What is even sillier is the label’s insistence on attempting to photograph the artist in various sultry poses, which she evidently wants to discourage by refusing to provide much of a smile (the rumor is that she’s not happy with this part of the business at all). If you are looking for unchallenging background music, this will fit the bill, but jazz fans are advised to check out Krall’s earlier releases instead.

Like a mink draped over mahogany, Diana Krall’s luxuriously supple alto adorns the vintage songs of romance and longing found on Love Scenes with a palpable aura of glamour and late-night cool. Her ostensibly effortless command of phrasing and intonation, whether the mood is seduction or a sweet sassiness, further fortifies the opinion that the Canadian vocalist-pianist possesses one of the great female jazz voices to surface in the late 1990s. Augmented by spare but skillful instrumentation from bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone, Krall sustains a largely quiet (though hardly sleepy) ambience throughout the CD’s 12 selections, from Irving Berlin’s “How Deep Is the Ocean (How High Is the Sky),” which she also uses as a showcase for her touch at the keyboard, to Gershwin’s “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.” Her swing is artfully subdued (“All or Nothing at All”), and her wry, expressive approach to “Peel Me a Grape” is pure charm. Yet Krall shines most luminously on languid gems such as “I Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You” and “Garden in the Rain.” Anyone in search of an album ideal for watching city lights at 2 a.m. should keep Love Scenes in mind

Vocalist/pianist Diana Krall was a very hot property by the time this Impulse CD was released. Teamed in a trio with her regular guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Christian McBride, Krall here mostly emphasizes ballads having something to do with love. She is at her best on “I Don’t Know Enough About You,” “I Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance With You,” and “How Deep Is the Ocean.” However, Krall’s earlier Nat King Cole tribute had more variety in tempos and moods and is recommended first. A decent but not essential release.
