Multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef mesmerizes with his 1972 release, The Gentle Giant. His innovative style revolutionized the jazz scene. A mix of jazz with soul, the album showcases Lateef’s unmatched musicianship. Lateef performs numerous wind instruments on the album but the true highlight is his funky use of the flute. The stunning album includes an upbeat “Nubian Lady,” a groovy “Jungle Plum” and an inspired rendition of “Hey Jude.”

Yusef Lateef’s music from the early ’70s commands large doses of both appeal and skepticism. At a time when funk and fusion were merging with the intensely volatile and distrustful mood of the U.S., Lateef’s brand of Detroit soul garnered new fans, and turned away those who preferred his earlier hard bop jazz or world music innovations. Thus The Gentle Giant is an appropriate title, as Lateef’s levitational flute looms large over the rhythm & blues beats central to the equation. Kenny Barron’s Fender Rhodes electric piano is also a sign of the times, an entry point introducing him to the contemporary jazz scene, and on that point alone is historically relevant. The post-Bitches Brew, pre-Weather Report/Headhunters time period is to be considered, and how this music put Lateef in many respects to the forefront of the movement. While inconsistent and at times uneven, there’s more to praise than damn in the grooves and unique musicianship he offers with this small ensemble of focused and singular-minded players. At once funky and cool, Barron’s “Nubian Lady” sets the tone out of the gate, the tune totally trumping Herbie Mann’s Memphis Underground/Push Push style. The similar-sounding “Jungle Plum” is more danceable, simpler, and less attractive. While “Aftican Song” is also in this vein, it is less about the continent in the title as it is reflective of the era, and a slower number. Perhaps that actual title and the sleigh bell-driven “Below Yellow Bell” could have been reversed, for it is more Afrocentric, with Lateef’s wordless vocal counterpoint closer to sounds of the savanna over a baroque rhythm & blues. “Hey Jude,” under-produced to the point of inaudibility at the outset (the caveat given is “do not adjust the playback level on your audio equipment, readjust your mind”), busts out on the incessantly repeated “na na” chorus with the Sweet Inspirations doing the honors. The other tracks lay low, as Lateef and Al “Tootie” Heath’s flutes and Kermit Moore’s cello go into late-night mode for “Lowland Lullabye,” “The Poor Fisherman” explores the leader’s interest in Asian sounds with call and response, and “Queen of the Night” is a two-minute shortie with Eric Gale’s modulated guitar mixing up meters of 4/4 and 3/4 in a slightly macabre way. This recording was produced in the middle of Lateef’s commercial crossroads phase that started with the Atlantic label issue Yusef Lateef’s Detroit in 1969 and ended in 1977 with the CTI release Autophysiopsychic. Though these tracks are potent reminders of how jazz was willfully being manipulated by the record companies — Creed Taylor in particular — this album is clear evidence of how great a musician Yusef Lateef was, but not in the context of his best music. –AllMusic Review by Michael G. Released in 1987, Yusef Lateef’s Little Symphony found the multi-instrumentalist incorporating riveting jazz improvisations throughout this exquisite four-movement work. Every soaring instrumentation found on the record is performed by Lateef including the water drum, percussive sitar, flutes, reeds, shannie, gourdophone and kalangu. The album earned Grammy Award for Best New Age Album despite having no prior association with the genre.

Always trying new and untested musical ideas, Yusef Lateef sets out on this recording date to create a tapestry of music that pulls both from jazz’s rich history of improvisation and spontaneity, and classical music’s structural contrivances. Lateef is heard alone on this recording, overdubbing each track himself. He plays a variety of instruments including reeds, flutes, and such obscurities as a shannie, gourdophone, kalangu, water drum, and percussive sitar.

The great avant-jazz drummer Andrew Cyrille whose associations have ranged from a long, vintage collaboration with Cecil Taylor to co-leading current all-star collective Trio 3 with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman makes his ECM debut as bandleader on The Declaration Of Musical Independence and what a band it is! Guitarist Bill Frisell, keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum and double bassist Ben Street are perfectly in synch with Cyrille throughout this set that opens with a Coltrane cover (Coltrane Time) but is otherwise all-original, including three pieces composed by the entire quartet in the studio.

A portentous title for an unself-consciously inquisitive, selflessly collective quartet nominally led by the great drummer Andrew Cyrille, an elderly master of unpredictable yet flowing free-jazz momentum, steered by the kind of patience that drummers aren’t always famous for. His very classy partners here are Bill Frisell (guitar), jazz/classical synth pioneer Richard Teitelbaum (a long-time Cyrille collaborator) and Ben Street (double bass). A version of John Coltrane’s Coltrane Time kicks things off with a snare pattern Cyrille learned from Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali – which he sustains while the others float rhythmically and arrhythmically around him. Frisell’s melancholy Kaddish rings quietly on over Cyrille’s far-distant mallets, Street’s Say resembles a slow pop ballad, and Dazzling (Perchordally Yours) is built around alternations of single chord-hits and silences, the players reacting to the resonances. It all swings without regular swing, sounding fluently melodic, though much of it is cell-like and episodic. It might be too wrapped up in itself for some, but its close-listening musicality grows on you.

With her sixth album, Catherine Russell journeys to the blue heart of the great African American songbook. Swinging forth with soulful interpretations, Catherine channels the golden age of Harlem, as befits this vibrant daughter of jazz. Vocalists Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, and Dinah Washington provide inspiration where tunesmiths like Benny Carter, Irving Berlin, Andy Razaf and Fats Waller once ruled the roost of a renaissance that continues to reverberate.

Jazz chanteuse Catherine Russell offers a special treat with the release of her sixth album, Harlem On My Mind, a tribute to her mother’s birthplace and the performers who made the Apollo Theater the mecca of Black entertainment. Encompassing a dozen selections from the Great American Songbook, the album brings new life to gems of the Harlem jazz scene of the 1920s-1940s.

Opening with the title track, Russell gives a sophisticated, subtle yet swinging interpretation of this Irving Berlin chestnut. First performed by Ethel Waters in 1933, the song speaks to an expat in Paris longing to get back to the Cotton Club and the “Hi-de-ho” (a reference to bandleader Cab Calloway). Following are three songs made famous by Billie Holliday in the 1930s. “I Can’t Believe That You’re in Love With Me” (1926) highlights the terrific backing band in an arrangement by Andy Farber. “Swing! Brother, Swing!” by the great Clarence Williams is a wonderful uptempo romp, with Russell and the band perfectly articulating the style and mood of the period. On the ballad “The Very Thought of You,” Russell’s smooth as butter interpretation digs into the groove on this slower, more atmospheric version of the Lady Day classic.

Returning to the 1920s, Russell interprets another Clarence Williams song, “You’ve Got the Right Key, but the Wrong Keyhole,” originally performed by vaudeville singer Virginia Liston with Williams in the 1920s. This bluesy arrangement features animated solos by Matt Munisteri on banjo and Mark Lopeman on clarinet.

Russell’s father, the legendary pianist/composer/bandleader Luis Russell, recorded the popular Henry Nemo song, “Don’t Take Your Love,” with his last big band in the 1940s so it obviously holds a special place in his daughter’s heart. Once again, Russell stretches the ballad to its limits in a slow and sultry arrangement reminiscent of the Nancy Wilson version.

Returning to songs made famous by Billie Holiday, Russell covers the 1929 Fats Waller jazz standard “Blue Turning Grey Over You” and the pop classic “You’re My Thrill” from 1933. These are followed by another pair of songs with close ties to Harlem: “I Want a Man” popularized by Annisteen Allen and Lucky Millinder (onetime leader of the house band at the Apollo), and “When Lights are Low” by Harlem born Benny Carter and Spencer Williams.

The album closes with a pair of songs from the 1960s: “Talk To Me, Talk To Me” by actor/composer Joe Seneca (popularized by Little Willie John and Aretha Franklin), and Dinah Washington’s “Let Me Be the First to Know“ (from her Back to the Blues album).

With Harlem On My Mind, Catherine Russell provides yet another instant classic, brimming with impeccable style, faithful interpretations, and top notch arrangements. Few singers today could pull this off with as much aplomb and sophistication as Russell, who was quite literally weaned on this music as the daughter of two notable jazz musicians. Young vocalists take note – this is how you sing in the pocket!

New York Time offers jazz fans a wonderful opportunity to hear two rising stars of the genre (McBride, Jackson) performing with two respected elders (Cobb, Walton). The past also meets the present in other exciting ways on this recording. The set is highlighted by several of Walton’s original compositions and a cover of the legendary John Coltrane’s “Naima”. Meanwhile, McBride’s acoustic bass talents are spotlighted on his self-written composition “Grove” (for trumpeter Roy Hargrove) and Jackson represents the new vanguard of jazz with his own tune titled “Notes in Three”.

Having spent most of his time since the late ’90s re-appropriating pop, funk, rock, and fusion elements into his progressive jazz albums, bassist Christian McBride makes a joyously off the cuff return to straight-ahead acoustic jazz on 2006’s New York Time. Working here with the seasoned rhythm section giants of pianist Cedar Walton and drummer Jimmy Cobb as well as an equally engaging contemporary, tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson, McBride has crafted a back-to-basics album that, while firmly in the mainstream jazz tradition, works to remind listeners why they dug him in the first place. New York Time is as creatively inspired, forward-thinking, and unexpected as 2000’s Sci-Fi and 2003’s Vertical Vision are with their mix of electronic-funk and angular, postmodern jazz, and McBride can’t escape the fact that his true gift is for swaggering, double-breasted, no holds barred, late-night, straight-ahead modern jazz. Primarily, it’s his big, full, commanding double-bass tone that not only drives his bandmates forward, but buoys them on fat swells of sound. It’s that natural acoustic tone and earthy pulse of McBride that fit so well with this kind of no-fuss jazz. It’s also that sound, paired with the soulfully urbane and elegantly muscular chops of Walton, Cobb, and Jackson, that makes New York Time a jazz lover’s dream.

Manhattan is an album that captures the dynamic moods of the world’s greatest city as interpreted through the supple interplay of this skillful threesome. “Hazeltine, Mraz and Drummond have established an easy chemistry that hinges on their shared sense of time and conversational exchanges within the structure of each song,” according to the album’s liner notes. Hazeltine and Mraz are both no strangers to Chesky Records, having made their debuts for the label on Jon Faddis’1998 Remembrances CD/SACD and Phil Woods’ Here’s to My Lady CD/SACD, respectively.

“Throughout this highly interactive session, Mraz and Drummond create an interesting dynamic with their push and pull approach to swinging in tandem, with Mraz nailing the beat with unparalleled precision and Drummond laying back behind the beat just a touch in a loose, relaxed manner. Hazeltine colors the harmonic contour of these standards with subtle reharmonizations on familiar themes while swinging in quintessentially straight ahead fashion.” –Bill Milkowski

The group Food has defined a new kind of lyrical electroacoustic improvisation since its founding as a quartet in 1998. Now a core duo of UK saxophonist Iain Ballamy and Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen, they are joined by guests as needed for various projects. Following live dates in Norway in 2007 and 2008 with trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær and Austrian improvising guitarist Christian Fennesz, the four musicians headed into the studio to record the highly praised Quiet Inlet, resplendent with melodic improvisation, trancelike pulses and shifting clouds of sound.

“Quiet Inlet” is the perfect title for this project by the duo Food, co-led by drummer Thomas Stronen and saxophonist Iain Ballamy. An exercise in texture music via electronica, Stronen and Ballamy take their time constructing lush, late-night vistas of layered sounds, with depth more important than pace. Hardly any variation in tempo can be heard, as sparse percussion accents prompt Ballamy’s expansive tenor or soprano saxophone sounds. Only on the funky “Mictyris” in 7/8 time does the ensemble veer away from cloudy soundscapes. Special guest trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer – a true pioneer of modern electronic film noir-type music – is heard invading the space during “Dweller,” while guitarist Christian Fennesz takes a subsidiary role on select tracks, rather than a frontman’s stance. As dreamy music goes, this album is not only a departure from the ECM catalog, but could be a portent toward the future of a new style of contemporary music.

The genesis of the duet partnership of pianist Jacky Terrasson and trumpeter/flugelhornist Stephane Belmondo stretches back 30 years. Close friends from their days living and playing in Paris and then while band mates in vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater’s groups in the mid-‘90s, the pair enjoyed a simpatico musical relationship. But they lost contact over the years until six years ago when they reconnected and played a duo show in the south of France. That proved to be the seed of their sublime duo album on Impulse, Mother, that was recorded last fall and in April of this year at Recall Studios in the southern France village of Pompignan.

Unlike Terrasson’s last recording, 2015’s Take This on Impulse!, which was fueled by loops, Afro beats, wah-wah Fender Rhodes voicing’s, hip-hop flavors and smart pop, Mother is largely a quiet, reflective and even mournful collection of 14 songs. The set list includes originals, American standards by Charlie Haden and Dave Brubeck, French standards (including the love song “La Chanson d’Hélène” from French cinema), the cover of a hit song by Stevie Wonder, and several short interludes scattered about the album (including the 40-second whimsical “Pic Saint-Loup,” which is the name of the region’s local wine, and the pounce and thunder 54-second tribute to the town).

“We recorded some 30 songs over the course of three days and realized that the ballads sounded great,” Terrasson says. “They had a certain beauty and atmosphere. So we decided to get rid of all the uptempo tunes and give the album a color from beginning to end, an intimate, romantic and relaxed, when we were planning on the selections for the album, which is really an album of ballads.”

After their first duo show many years earlier, Terrasson and Belmondo went on the road over the past two years and developed their sound together, coming up with improvisational gems marked by spirited musical conversations, spot-on harmonies and support for each other’s inventive solo runs. They danced, they mused, and they sparked, creating an atmosphere of pure fun and play.

Terrasson offers his sunny “Hand in Hand” while Belmondo delivers his swinging “Souvenirs.” Mother opens with Haden’s soulful gem “First Song” where the pair lushly bring out the beauty in its melancholy, and the album ends with the two digging deep into the heart of the 1943 French classic, “Que reste-t-il de nos amours” by Léo Chauliac and Charles Trenet (it’s also been recorded as “I Wish You Love” with English lyrics).

“The short tunes came when Stephane and I decided to play free to see what we came up with,” Terrasson says. Cases in point: “Fun Keys,” which breaks from the balladic framework with free-spirited flips and tumbles, and a sweet and old-timey take on Stephane Grappelli’s “Les Valseuses.”

As for the duo’s launch into Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” the song is unrecognizable because of the reharmonization. Terrasson laughs and says, “It’s like everything I do. Whether it’s a tune by Stevie or Monk, you make it your own, otherwise why bother?”

Originally slated to be titled Twin Spirit, Terrasson, Belmondo and co-producer (and label head) Jean-Philippe Allard agreed that the recording should be titled after the pianist’s spare and sober tune “Mother.” The reason? Jacky’s mother passed away on June 4, shortly after the album’s production. “We decided to pay tribute to her,” Terrasson says. “This is a powerful take. I originally wrote this song a while ago and it’s dedicated to my mom and all the moms and all the women who can’t be moms, All the ones who want to be moms, to all the mothers”.

A superb, mostly self-taught musician, Jimmy Cobb is the elder statesman of all the incredible Miles Davis bands. Cobb’s inspirational work with Miles, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Co. spanned 1957 until 1963 and included the masterpiece Kind of Blue, the most popular jazz recording in history. On this new Chesky Records recording, Jazz In the Key of Blue, Jimmy Cobb pairs up once again with 36-year old, Grammy Award winning trumpeter, Roy Hargrove. who has firmly established him-self as among the premier players in jazz and beyond. Jazz In the Key of Blue continues to prove Jimmy Cobb’s mettle as a band leader, his imperturbable, rock-steady swing, paving the way for the rhythms and sounds of yet another generation of jazzmen.

The 50th anniversary celebrations for Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue in 2009 reminded the world that drummer Jimmy Cobb is the last surviving participant from that groundbreaking session. This set is a romantic-standards programme fronted by trumpeter and flugelhornist Roy Hargrove and guitarist Russell Malone, with only the swish of Cobb’s understated brushwork testifying to his presence for long stretches. In an era in which such familiar jazz materials are frequently subverted, rhythmically reinvented or morphed into hybrids with other songs, it would be easy to write off this straightahead session as craftsmanlike but out of its time – except that something, perhaps respect for Cobb’s pedigree, stirs a dazzling inventiveness from the more familiarly funk-and-R&B-inclined Hargrove, and from Malone who sounds like the best of guitarists – Charlie Christian, Jim Hall and himself – combined. Hargrove’s breathy flugel immediately establishes his captivating poise on Everytime We Say Goodbye over Malone’s cushioning chords, and his eruption into a fiercer attack after the delicate opening of With You I’m Born Again is a delicious shock. The trumpeter’s New Orleans roots come out over Malone’s bent notes and Charlie Christian swing on I Had the Craziest Dream. It shows just how much younger players cherish the standards book, and how unobtrusively a veteran such as Cobb can help them.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 65:14 minutes | 747 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download  – Source: Bandcamp | Front cover | © World Galaxy Records

This fall, trumpeter and composer Josef Leimberg will launch his debut full-length Astral Progressions. Hitting vinyl prints and digital formats with the Alpha Pup Records jazz imprint World Galaxy, Astral Progressions is a powerful record in the canon of 21st century music. It also continues the momentum Leimberg achieved on the Kendrick Lamar Grammy Award winning album “To Pimp A Butterfly”. A hybrid state of jazz fusion, world music, R&B and golden era hip hop instrumentalism. Josef Leimberg has created a rich tapestry of sound that fits right in with the resurgence of progressive music in the 2010’s, launching out on his own terms after an impressive career of guest work.

Leimberg’s debut album features an array of innovators and game changers in modern progressive music. Kamasi Washington, Bilal, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Kurupt, Terrace Martin and Miguel Atwood Ferguson are just a small list of the brilliant minds that make the Astral Progressions outing special. Many of the featured artists became with the LP through world renowned creator Shafiq Husayn. Leimberg would connect with various musicians associated to his camp through studio recordings, gigging and rehearsals, building on his compositions in a very organic and social way.

Kurupt connects with Astral Progression’s cosmic message unlike anything else he’s done before, lending his verbal talents over a cosmic west coast flavor. Goergia Anne Muldrow and Bilal add considerable weight as well, taking direction into spiritually tinged fusions of R&B and soul. The ending track pays special homage to Leimberg’s mother, including a recording of her speaking about the complexities of life and where we all fit into the bigger picture of this universe. To describe this record in full would take volumes of thought, bridged under the vision of Leimberg in every note and measure.

Leimberg takes the sonic power of Astral Progressions back to the origins of the ‘70s jazz fusion movement. Included is a superb Miles Davis cover of ‘Lonely Fire.’ Originally recorded and featured on the 1970s Miles Davis studio album Big Fun, Leimberg revamps the spiritually tinged piece with uptempo pocket driven drum work, flaring solo’s and a sense of heightened energy that transforms the chord arrangements of the original into something entirely new. Paul Livingston adds lush sitar, tambura and sarod, bringing the Indian influences shed on the original composition into the 21st century state of Leimberg’s vision. It’s a perfect summation of how organic, fluid and exotic the record is as a whole.

With the release of her 1993 Blue Note debut Cruisin’, pianist Junko Onishi arrived as one of the most promising of Japan-born jazz musicians. Growing up in Tokyo, Onishi received classical piano lessons but became quite interested in jazz. She studied at Berklee and after three years moved to New York. Already a well-developed player, Onishi worked with Joe Henderson, Betty Carter, Kenny Garrett, and Mingus Dynasty before recording her debut as a leader. She considers her style to be based on Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Ornette Coleman; her other recordings from the ’90s include 1994’s Live at the Village Vanguard, 1995’s Piano Quintet Suite, and 1999’s Fragile. After Fragile, Onishi took a break from releasing albums to focus on developing her music. She returned over ten years later with 2009’s Musical Moments. She followed that up a year later with her 2010 Verve debut, Baroque, which featured several Onishi originals as well as interpretations of some 20th century classical pieces. Tea Times is her new album, recorded and released in 2016 on Japanese Village Records label.

This duo of superb musicians can simultaneously be highly refined, and yet completely off-the-wall. They are two of the brightest lights of the international firmament of jazz as seen through a European prism. They have also put down a marker with “Tandem”: their stellar collaboration is most definitely going places. The dialogue between Wollny and Peirani constantly brims with ideas, and they also have a perfect way of circling in and out of each other’s way.

Between them, the German pianist Michael Wollny and French accordionist Vincent Peirani create as rich a variety of musical sounds, textures and forms as you’re ever likely to hear from two acoustic instruments. In style, these 10 pieces go from highly structured arrangement through more conventional jazz treatment to abstract free improvisation. Each has a charm of its own, makes perfect sense and is formidably well played. Outstanding among them are Wollny’s Bells and arrangements of Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Björk’s Hunter. Even in the quietest passages the dynamic rapport between the two is obvious. The two final tracks are live concert recordings, where the duet’s improvisation bears out Wollny’s description of playing with Peirani as “like tennis on fast forward”.

One of music’s most beautiful and critically acclaimed voices returns with a new studio album that finds her returning to her jazz roots. The album is a kindred spirit to the singer’s breakout debut Come Away With Me and finds the 9-time Grammy-winner returning to the piano and her roots. The album features jazz luminaries including her Blue Note label mates saxophonist Wayne Shorter, organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, and drummer Brian Blade on a 12-song set that presents 9 new originals alongside covers of songs by Horace Silver, Duke Ellington and Neil Young.

Norah Jones took liberty with her blockbuster success to set out on a musical walkabout, spending a good portion of the decade following 2004’s Not Too Late experimenting, either on her own albums or on a variety of collaborations. Day Breaks, released four years after the atmospheric adult alternative pop of the Danger Mouse-produced Little Broken Hearts, finds Jones returning home to an extent: it, like her 2002 debut Come Away with Me, is a singer/songwriter album with roots in pop and jazz, divided between originals and sharply selected covers. Such similarities are immediately apparent, but Day Breaks is much slyer than a mere revival. That term suggests a slight air of desperation, but Jones comes from a place of confidence on Day Breaks, happy to demonstrate everything she’s learned over the years. Often, these tricks are deliberately sly: she’ll pair her torchy original “And Then There Was You” with a woozy, bluesy cover of Neil Young’s “Don’t Be Denied” that winds up evoking Come Away with Me, then follow that up with the dense, nocturnal rhythms of “Day Breaks.” She threads in versions of Horace Silver’s “Peace” and Duke Ellington’s “African Flower” while inviting saxophonist Wayne Shorter and organist Lonnie Smith in to play – moves that signal that there’s a strong, elastic jazz undercurrent to Day Breaks that means this record breathes more than her debut. Such a sense of quiet adventure gives the record depth, but what gives it resonance are the exquisitely sculpted songs. Jones’ originals feel as elegant as time-honored standards, and all her covers feel fresh. The former speak to her craft, the latter to her gifts as a stylist, and the two combine to turn Day Breaks into a satisfying testament to her ever-evolving musicianship.

Tenor saxophonist Richard Elliot celebrates his funk and R&B roots on Summer Madness, the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2014 release Lip Service. Recorded with the members of his touring band, the album’s cast includes two other horn players augmenting Elliot’s signature sax work: trumpeter and trombonist Rick Braun, who also produced the sessions and, on several tracks, baritone saxophonist Curt Waylee appears. Most importantly though, the songs were created from scratch as Elliot and his musicians formulated and honed their ideas in the studio, with Braun’s ultra-capable guidance. For Elliot, recruiting the additional players and having the entire band, plus a respected veteran producer help him shape the music, was integral to the project’s success.

Summer Madness is a new kind of Richard Elliot recording. For one thing, the cast includes two other horn men augmenting Elliot’s signature sax work: trumpeter/trombonist Rick Braun, who also produced the album and, on several tracks, baritone saxophonist Curt Waylee. Most importantly though, the music was created from scratch as Elliot and his handpicked musicians formulated and honed their ideas in the studio, with Braun’s ultra-capable guidance. For Elliot, recruiting the additional players and having the entire band plus a well-respected veteran producer help him shape the music was integral to the project’s success.

The result seven new originals and three classic interpretations is unquestionably one of the most electrifying and gratifying recordings of Richard Elliot’s three-plus-decade solo career. From the opening salvo, a super-funkified take on Spyro Gyra’s ‘Cachaca’, through the closing ‘Mr. Nate’s Wild Ride,’ spotlighting bassist Nathaniel Phillips, who wrote the track along with Elliot and Braun, Summer Madness is one of those albums that simply takes hold the moment you press play and never lets go. Along the way it touches down on a variety of moods and styles, from Latin- and African-inspired funk to soul jazz, even flirting with fusion on the hard-driving, appropriately titled ‘Ludicrous Speed’.

Tracklist:
01 – Cachaca
02 – Breakin’ It Down

04 – West Coast Jam
05 – Harry The Hipster
06 – Slam-O-Rama
07 – Back To You
08 – Ludicrous Speed
09 – Summer Madness
10 – Mr. Nate’s Wild Ride

This recording celebrated and marked Super Soul Bros’ 5th FanimeCon weekend performing at a nearby venue to the convention that inspired the band’s formation.

Their fun sound and concept tends to capture an audience that transcends both genre and generation. They reel in the 20-something crowd that grew up playing Genesis and Super Nintendo, but they also grab baby boomers who can respect their sound and musicianship. -— Metro Silicon Valley
