This recording was made 10 months before Ben Webster’s death in 1972. Webster, who had left the United States in 1965 to settle in Europe – first in Copenhagen and then in Amsterdam – was visiting fellow musician and friend Tete Montoliu in Barcelona. Webster and pianist Montoliu went back a ways, having played together regularly in Webster’s Copenhagen days. In fact, Montoliu cited Webster and Don Byas as his two chief musical influences. Webster and Montoliu understood each other deeply, and their comfort with on another is palpable in this recording. Their accompaniment of one another is seamless. On board with these two is Montoliu’s regular working trio-mates, Eric Peter on bass and Peer Wyboris on drums.

“Ah, that unique, highly individual sound of Ben Webster’s sax, and nearly an hour’s worth of it – in top-flight SACD sonics yet! The original session dates from November of 1972 in Barcelona, Spain, and Ben is front and center throughout – his every note and breath standing out in 3D.” – John Henry, Audiophile Audition, September 2011

There’s no shortage of Webster’s trademark breathy, fat tenor tone here. In fact, given the sparse arrangement, that rich, humid, giant sax blooms like on few other recordings. Highlights include “Ben’s Blues,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “The Man I Love” and “Don’t Blame Me.”

Recorded in 1958 and released the following year on Verve, The Soul of Ben Webster is a superb example of swinging mainstream jazz and bop. Webster is in fine form throughout, as are his fellow musicians including trumpeter Art Farmer, bassist Milt Hinton, pianist Jimmy Jones, and others.

Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the original master tapes to vinyl and PCM. The DSD was sourced from the PCM. George listened to all of the different A/D converters he had before he chose which to use, and he felt the George Massenburg GML 20 bit A/D produced the best and most synergistic sound for the project.

“I really think that the people who are willing to lay down their money for these reissues are going to get something really outstanding.” — George Marino, Sterling Sound engineer, commenting on Analogue Productions’ Verve 25-title reissue series.

Studio Master, Official Digital Download  – Source: Q0buz | @ Nonesuch

Exquisite 32-track live collection from the US jazz pianist, recorded over a decade! Includes original compositions, as well as material from John Coltrane, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, Thelonious Monk, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Nirvana & more.

One of the most lauded jazz pianists of his generation, Brad Mehldau is a supremely gifted musician, known for his atmospheric and spare solo performances. 10 Years Solo Live presents an extensive collection of recordings handpicked by Mehldau and culled from at least 19 live concerts. These are solo shows Mehldau performed while on tour in Europe from 2004 to 2014. Clocking in at around 300 minutes and spread over four discs, these tracks are presented out of chronological order and with the intention of telling a story – or at least taking the listener on a journey. Thankfully, whether you choose to engage this music by skipping around or listening straight through, there is much to enjoy. A true postmodernist, Mehldau’s song choices run the gamut from well-worn standards (“My Favorite Things”) to reworked alt-rock covers (Stone Temple Pilots’ “Interstate Love Song”), classical (Brahms’ “Intermezzo B flat major, Op. 76 No. 4”), and his own expansive original compositions. Also included are such Mehldau concert staples as his landmark ruminative reworking of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and his similarly inspired mash-up of the Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” and the Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset.” Elsewhere, we get languid, drawn-out jazz standards, such as his endlessly yearning, farsighted take on “On the Street Where You Live” and his delicately sweet, childlike interpretation of “I’m Old Fashioned.” Adding to the sheer amount of music here are Mehldau’s detailed liner notes in which he discusses his song choices, how he interprets a tune, and how he thinks of this material in retrospect. Mehldau is a philosopher and poet at his core, and this set finds him delving into some of his deeper inspirations, including reflections on God and musings about the contrast between light and dark, loud and soft, new and old. It’s just the kind of intricate, deeply thoughtful writing one would expect from the man behind such intensely focused and beautifully crafted improvisations.

Blue Note releases I Long To See You, the profound new album from Charles Lloyd & The Marvels. The album finds the iconic saxophonist and recent NEA Jazz Master in the company of a new band featuring guitarist Bill Frisell and pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz, along with his longtime quartet members bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland. The album also includes two remarkable guest vocal appearances by Willie Nelson and Norah Jones. All together they have created a sumptuous collection of 10 songs that range from traditional hymns to anti-war folk protests to re-envisioned Lloyd originals from his earlier recordings.

Saxophonist Charles Lloyd has been working with guitarists periodically since the 1950s: Calvin Newborn, Gabor Szabo, John Abercrombie, and others have played in his bands. On I Long to See You, he (with his stellar rhythm section – bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland) renews that relationship with two gifted players: Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz (the latter on lap and pedal steel). This program yields folk and spiritual songs, re-recordings of Lloyd’s own tunes, a pop nugget, and a new original. In what feels like the input from the label, there are two guest vocal appearances to boot: Willie Nelson beautifully delivers Ed McCurdy’s antiwar classic “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream,” and Norah Jones offers a slow, dreamy reading of “You Are So Beautiful.” I Long to See You feels more like a collaboration between Lloyd and Frisell than a leader date, which is sometimes problematic: these men can be overly deferential to one another. The album starts promisingly with a brooding read of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War” that threatens to explode at any moment. Frisell and Leisz (who have worked together a lot) take it through deep winding blues, building tension before Lloyd enters and carries it toward the outside before returning to blues, while Harland’s circular drumming becomes somberly hypnotic. Lloyd plays flute on “Of Course, of Course” (originally recorded for an album of the same name for Columbia in 1964). Like its predecessor, it’s tough, swinging post-bop with colorful slide guitar work and rim-shot syncopations. “La Llorona,” from Lloyd’s ECM years, is a standout: it captures his open, mournful, Spanish-tinged wail, fleshed out by elegant, timbral guitars, a sad bassline, and Harland’s magical timekeeping. “Shenandoah” (which Frisell has recorded before), “All My Trials,” and “Abide with Me” are all melodically attractive, but they lack the undercurrent of passion Lloyd has imbued traditional material with in the past. He and Frisell appear so seduced by their melodies, they treat them as fragile objects, not songs whose meanings need to be further explored. Frisell’s speculative solo intro on “Sombrero Sam” is overly long; Lloyd’s rhythmic sweeping flute doesn’t enter until five minutes in, and slips out too quickly. The lone new tune, “Barche Lamsel,” more than compensates. Over 16 minutes in length, it’s easily the most exploratory thing here. It commences slowly but starts cooking five minutes in. Lloyd and the rhythm section are at their modal improvisational best, moving through folk, funk, blues, Eastern modes, and post-bop. Frisell and Leisz lend fine solos as well as layered textural and atmospheric support. The tune is a journey that ends in a question mark. I Long to See You is well worth investigating even if, at times, it is overly tentative.

When Chick Corea recorded Piano Improvisations in 1971, he opened the floodgates on a new era of solo piano music, one that continues to resonate today. Portraits continues Chick’s solo piano evolution in a tour de force: in a full live performance, he embraces jazz standards, classical renditions and sublime Corea Classics.

The portraits that Corea “paints” of members of the audience are, if anything, even more personal because he tries to define the individuals in an improvised solo after inviting them to sit beside him on stage. Tracks are named after the locations in which they were conceived (e.g. Portrait #2 Casablanca, Portrait #1 Vilnius). They are short, but contain meaty and often exploratory material; and to my mind are generally more interesting than Corea’s famous Children’s Songs, nine of which occupy much of the disc. Of course, we don’t see the subjects that inspire these portraits, and therefore the audience’s response, which ranges from mid-tune applause to guffaws, is incomprehensible.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 3:24:59 minutes | 3,98 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download  – Source: HDTracks | @ Concord Jazz

Jazz piano icon Chick Corea presents Trilogy released under Stretch Records/Concord Jazz – A live, triple-CD document of his virtuosic trio with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade. The album ranges from reinventions of classic Corea compositions and previously unrecorded originals to an array of jazz standards and even freshly re-imagined Scriabin.

Trilogy, recorded live around the world, is a recording to rank with the landmarks of Corea’s career. A marvel of live recorded sound, particularly for having been captured in multiple stops on the road, Trilogy sees the trio reinvent classic Corea compositions (such as “Spain”), as well as previously unreleased originals (“Piano Sonata: The Moon”). The group also performs an array of jazz standards (including two Thelonious Monk tunes) and even re-imagines a Prelude by fin-de-siècle Russian composer Alexander Scriabin (“Op. 11, No. 9”).

Summing up Trilogy, Corea says, “I’ve made a life of learning and inventing ways to make music, but it often seems unproductive for me to try to describe it in words. But I have one about working with this trio and making this live album: pleasure. I hope listeners experience the same.”

Arguably (and not many would argue) the greatest living jazz pianist, Chick Corea has had a long and highlight-filled career, beginning with his tenure with the great Miles Davis when Davis was defining the jazz-rock synthesis, through Corea’s own breakthrough jazz fusion recordings and his subsequent journeys into everything from the post-bop avant-garde to classical and new age, and his restless and musically inclusive spirit has always shone through. This expansive live release finds Corea working with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade, and the three have an uncanny connection, filling space with gorgeous and subtle phrasings, gliding through all manner of styles with a seemingly effortless elegance, grace, and freshness. The three-disc Trilogy was recorded live at tour stops in Washington, D.C. and Oakland, California, and in Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Turkey, and Japan, by Corea’s longtime (since 1975) recording engineer Bernie Kirsh, who has provided the trio with a bright, warm production sound that allows each player’s slightest shift and voicing to come through with clear precision. In spite of the various locations, this set has a remarkable sonic coherency. It might be too much to call this set a summation of Corea’s legacy, but it does have the slight feel of a retrospective collectio. The band revisits classic Corea compositions like “Spain” and covering several tunes from the Great American Songbook, a couple of Thelonious Monk tunes (“Blue Monk” allows bassist McBride to particularly shine), a previously unissued Corea composition, the half-hour “Piano Sonata: The Moon,” where the trio shows its ability to move between scored and improvised sections with breathtaking ease, and even a take on classical Russian composer Alexander Scriabin’s “Op. 11, No. 9” that manages to breathe and flow without sounding like a forced fusion of classical and jazz. There are guests on three tracks, flutist Jorge Pardo and guitarist Niño Josele on “My Foolish Heart” and “Spain,” and vocalist Gayle Moran Corea, the pianist’s wife, on “Someday My Prince Will Come,” but it’s the three primary musicians who drive everything. Not exactly a holding pattern, and not exactly a career summation, Trilogy will surely please and delight Corea’s many fans.

B.B. King was 77 years old when Reflections was released, which perhaps entitled him to reflect back on the song standards the album contained. Despite advancing age, King had already been unusually busy on the recording front for a septuagenarian, turning out the gold-selling duets album Deuces Wild in 1997, Blues on the Bayou in 1998, Let the Good Times Roll: The Music of Louis Jordan in 1999, the double-platinum Riding With the King with Eric Clapton and Makin’ Love Is Good for You in 2000, and the seasonal recording A Christmas Celebration of Hope in 2002. For Reflections, he again worked with Simon Climie, who produced Riding With the King, and collaborated with a session band including such notables as Joe Sample, Nathan East, and Doyle Bramhall II. The songs ranged from pop evergreens like “I’ll String Along With You” and “For Sentimental Reasons” to blues favorites such as Lonnie Johnson’s “Tomorrow Night,” with oddities like “Always on My Mind” thrown in and even a couple of remakes of the earlier King songs “Word of Honor” and “Neighborhood Affair.” The arrangements, which included horn and string parts, left room for King’s distinctive blues guitar work, but really supported his always expressive voice. The result was a confident, easygoing album that stylistically could have been made in 1953 as easily as 2003. Blues purists and aficionados of blues guitar would find it only partially satisfying, but it reflected the breadth of musical taste of an artist who always played the blues but never restricted himself only to blues music or blues fans.

Drummer Billy Cobham was fresh from his success with the Mahavishnu Orchestra when he recorded his debut album, which is still his best. Most of the selections showcase Cobham in a quartet with keyboardist Jan Hammer, guitarist Tommy Bolin, and electric bassist Lee Sklar. Two other numbers include Joe Farrell on flute and soprano and trumpeter Jimmy Owens with guitarist John Tropea, Hammer, bassist Ron Carter, and Ray Barretto on congas. The generally high-quality compositions (which include “Red Baron”) make this fusion set a standout, a strong mixture of rock-ish rhythms and jazz improvising.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 63:18 minutes | 1,49 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: PonoMusic | @ Blue Note Records

Dr. Lonnie Smith, legendary Hammond B-3 organ master, is set to release his first Blue Note album in 45 years. Special guests incl. Robert Glasper & Joe Lovano. Smith first made a name for himself in the late 1960s as a sideman with saxophonist Lou Donaldson on albums including “Alligator Bogaloo” & soon after as a leader with his own soul-jazz classics including “Think!” & “Turning Point”.

Since Hammond B-3 specialist Lonnie Smith left Blue Note in the ’70s, the largely self-taught musician has added the “Dr.” to his name, adopted a traditional Sikh turban as a distinctive, if enigmatic style choice (it’s unclear if he follows the religion), and continued to release a steady stream of highly regarded soulful well before the 21st century came around. With 2016’s Evolution, Smith returns to Blue Note, his first studio album for the label since 1970’s Drives. Produced by Don Was, Evolution is one of the most robust albums of his career. Where his previous few albums found him working in a trio format, on Evolution, Was surrounds Smith with various small group configurations featuring a bevy of post-bop, funk, and soul-ready musicians including drummers Jonathan Blake and Joe Dyson, guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg, trumpeters Keyon Harrold and Maurice Brown, and others. Also joining Smith here are several jazz luminaries including genre-bending pianist Robert Glasper, whose glassy piano tone rubs nicely against Smith’s burnished Hammond warmth on “Play It Back.” Similarly, saxophonist Joe Lovano, who first made his debut on Smith’s 1975 effort Afrodesia, joins in on several cuts, including a reworking of “Afrodesia” and the slow-jam ballad “For Heaven’s Sake.” While Smith is the star of Evolution, the expanding group sound works well with his expansive approach to funk-jazz and the cuts with Harrold and Brown bring to mind the energetic hip-hop-inflected jazz of the Roots. Ultimately, it’s Smith’s juicy, nuanced, Hammond B-3 sound, deepened by over 50 years of experience, that makes Evolution such a career pinnacle.

Raised in Pittsburgh, jazz and pop singer and actress Christy Baron began her singing career as a cabaret vocalist and piano player while majoring in music at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. After moving to New York in 1984, she began working as a piano player in smaller jazz clubs. Her second release for CHESKY RECORDS, Steppin’, includes tunes by Peter Gabriel, the Beatles, Prince, and the Atlanta Rhythm Section. It wouldn’t be fair to characterize Baron as a straight-ahead jazz singer, but rather, she proudly calls herself an interpreter of music, and she fuses many different styles — funk, world music, and even electronica influences — into her approach to recording.

When jazz singers interpret popular music, their main source is often the great standards and Broadway music of the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s. Turning most of their attention to George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and other famous composers of that era, they tend to ignore the rock and R&B songs of the last 40 years, assuming they are irrelevant to jazz singing. Yet worthwhile popular music didn’t die with the Gershwin Brothers — great popular songs continue to be written, and on her second Chesky album, Steppin’, Christy Baron demonstrates that the popular music of the 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s can, in fact, be relevant to a jazz-oriented vocalist.

“There’s purity to Baron’s singing, an unfiltered honesty that’s as refreshing as an early morning snowfall and fulfilling as a heartfelt compliment.” – JazzTimes

A truly talented vocalist, Christy Baron brings us her third release entitled Take This Journey, again revealing an intriguing repertoire of modern classics delivered through her evocative voice. But it’s not only the sound of her voice that captivates the audience … her ability to maintain the delicate balance between the musical and poetic ideas of both the composer and lyricist creates the kind of mood that prepares the listener for a simply wonderful journey.

Take This Journey is a story, a reflection of life that captures the wonderful reality of the genuine interactions we share with the people around us. Christy’s rendition of the Turtles’ classic “Happy Together” sets the tone of the record with her sultry yet optimistic recording that is nothing less than convincing. The album features songs from Carole King including “Stand Behind Me” and “First Day in August,” and an incisive version of “Bitter With The Sweet.”

Christy’s clear vocalizations are apparent when she explains the sad fact that “A House Is Not a Home” and sets the limits in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd classic “Not While I’m Around.” The darker side of life is apparent through Sinatra’s classic “Old Devil Moon” and Cleo Lane’s “The Lies of Handsome Men.” But don’t lose hope just yet … a captivating rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Overjoyed” showcases Baron’s optimism in mankind. Christy Baron communicates the pleasure and the pain of our existence in Take This Journey, appealing to the intellectual listener with her sweet, knowing recognition of life’s wonder.

Award-winning French accordionist Vincent Peirani redefines his instrument for the 21st century on Living Being. He frees the accordion from the shackles of stereotype, making it sound like a cornucopia of different instruments from across the musical spectrum. Part of a growing generation of young jazz musicians educated in classical music but listening to and playing rock, pop and electronica, Peirani has carved out a reputation as one of the most innovative and genre defying composer/players working today.

Accordionist Vincent Peirani is THE new voice of his instrument. In rapid succession he has won the Prix Django d’Or and the Victoires du Jazz in France and was elected “Artist of the Year” by the French “Jazz Magazine”. In Germany he just won the ECHO Jazz award. After purely acoustic projects to date, “Living Being” is a creation of what one might call Peirani’s “Electric Band”. In addition to his sheer inexhaustible versatility and unbounded musicality, the album also reflects most of all the varying influences of his band members: Emile Parisien, again shines as a virtuoso of modern jazz; Julien Herne comes from the R’n’B and hip-hop scene; Yoann Serra is just as at home in the jazz tradition as he is in electronic music; and Tony Paeleman has his roots in the French pop scene. And so it is that the new album adds yet another vibrant facet to an already peerlessly varied artist’s profile.

Exceptional jazz musicians capture our hearts with a warm tone, lyrical lines, a feel for the blues, respect for space, sheer speed or stamina—to name just a handful of winning traits. But not all exceptional jazz musicians work well together and only a bunch of couplings have produced dazzling results. Perfect partnerships that come to mind include Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday and Lester Young, Max Roach and Clifford Brown, John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner, Blue Mitchell and Horace Silver, Sonny Stitt and Don Patterson, Jim Hall and Paul Desmond—to name a handful. Add alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges and organist Wild Bill Davis to the list.

Hodges had an insistent, sweet sound that gave the Duke Ellington Orchestra its polite sensuality. Davis, by contrast, had a pushy, swinging sound with meaty big-band expressions. What they shared in common was an intimate feel for the blues—though Hodges’s attack was a more mannered, 1930s articulation while Davis’s blues was R&B flavored.

Despite these stylistic differences, Hodges and Davis knew they sounded great together. You can hear the mutual respect in their playing, as each artist feeds off the other. They made eight small-group albums together in the 1960s, mostly for Verve. This list includes Blue Hodge (1961), Sandy’s Gone (1963), Mess of Blues (1963), Joe’s Blues (1965), Wings and Things (1965), Blue Pyramid (1965), Con Soul and Sax (1965) and In Atlantic City (1966).

All of these albums are on the money. On paper, the pairing never should have worked. One might have concluded that Hodges’s alto would be too mannered for Davis’s rambunctious organ, or that Davis wouldn’t take to Hodges’ satin-slipper approach. But like many great pairings, Hodges and Davis clearly appreciated the other’s sound and found inspiration in what they heard, working to maximize the combination. The result is a pairing that worked, album after album. –Marc Myers, jazzwax.com

Recorded: September 22, 1964 – December 3, 1964, RCA Victor’s Studio B, New York City

With the dynamic, swirling sounds of his Hammond B-3 organ, Wild Bill Davis provided a bridge from the big band swing of the 1930s and ’40s to the organ-driven R&B of the 1950s and early ’60s. Together with guitarist Floyd Smith and drummer Chris Columbus, Davis set the framework for the jazz organ combo sound. Initially a guitarist, Davis made his debut with Milt Larkin’s band in 1939. The group is remembered for the double-saxophone attack of Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson and Arnett Cobb. Davis, who was inspired by the guitar playing of Freddie Green, remained with the band until 1942. Moving to the piano, Davis joined Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 in 1945. By then, he had already attracted attention as a skilled writer and arranger. He later furnished original material and arrangements for both Duke Ellington and Count Basie. He was scheduled to record his arrangement of “April in Paris” with the Count Basie Orchestra in 1955, but was unable to make it to the recording sessions. Recorded without his participation, the tune went on to be a Top 30 pop hit. Intrigued by the organ playing of Fats Waller and Count Basie, Davis began to experiment with the Hammond B-3. He soon developed his unique approach. “I thought of (the organ) as a replacement in clubs for a big band,” he said during a late-’80s interview. Although he left Jordan’s band after five years to form his own trio, Davis periodically returned to play special engagements. Although eclipsed by succeeding jazz organists, including Jimmy Smith and Bill Doggett in the late ’50s, and Booker T. Jones in the ’60s, Davis remained active until his death from a heart attack in August 1995. His summer appearances in Atlantic City, New Jersey were an annual treat for almost three decades. A native of Moorestown, New Jersey, Davis studied music at Tuskegee University and Wiley College in Texas. –Artist Biography by Craig Harris
