Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, French accordionist Richard Galliano and Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren form the trio “Mare Nostrum”. This band forges connections between the discrete musical cultures of its three protagonists. This new album marks the return to the studio of a European supergroup. And they’re on top form.

Trumpeter Paolo Fresu is Sardinian, accordionist Richard Galliano is French, and Jan Lundgren, the pianist, is Swedish: three virtuosi who create entirely European music using jazz techniques. One comes up with an idea and all three contribute to the final result. These 12 pieces, with their hints of French chanson, Scandinavian folk dance, Italian love song and universal, dreamy ballads, belong to no particular category. Two of them are adapted from classical originals, one by Monteverdi and the other by Erik Satie, poles apart in time and sensibility, but here they sit happily side by side. With each piece lasting about four minutes, and the mood changing subtly from one to another, it’s a deeply enjoyable listen.

© CM/Qobuz

While big bands seemed to be fading fast during the late ’50s and early ’60s, bandleader Si Zentner was one of the few to front a successful big band — enjoying both critical and commercial acclaim. Born Simon H. Zentner on June 13, 1917 in New York City, the future bandleader picked up a violin at the age of four before switching over to trombone, and earned a music college scholarship. Originally studying to be a classical musician, Zentner became interested in more commercial styles of music after lending his skills to a recording session with composer/bandleader Andre Kostelanetz. Throughout the ’40s, Zentner learned the tricks of the trade by playing in bands led by such notables as Les Brown, Harry James, and Jimmy Dorsey.

Zentner then relocated to Los Angeles, where he worked regularly as a studio musician — and from 1949 through 1955, was on the MGM staff (working on such hit movies as Singing in the Rain and A Star Is Born). But Zentner’s desire to front his own big band peaked at this time. Signing a recording contract with Liberty Records in 1959, Zentner assembled a large swing outfit, and toured steadily (he once claimed that his band played 178 consecutive one-night stands). While several popular releases came out around this time (1959’s Thinking Man’s Band, 1960s Suddenly It’s Swing, 1963’s Waltz in Jazz Time), Zentner’s band won a staggering 13 straight Downbeat polls for ‘Best Big Band,’ as Zentner himself was recognized as ‘Best Trombonist’ in Playboy’s Jazz Reader’s Poll. Zentner’s band scored their biggest hit in 1961, with a Bob Florence-arranged twist version of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Up a Lazy River,” which managed to cross over into the Top 40 of the pop charts.
Eventually however, the public’s interest in big bands had dwindled to the point that even Zentner’s fine band found it increasingly hard to attract a substantial audience on tour. Zentner landed back on his feet in 1965, when he moved to Las Vegas and opened the Tropicana Hotel’s lounge, the Blue Room, accompanying Mel Tormé. Three years later, Zentner was named musical director for one of Las Vegas’ longest-running floor shows, Folies Bergere. But once more, Zentner couldn’t turn his back completely on taking a big band on the road, as he assembled another touring group. The ’90s saw such new releases as Road Band, Country Blues, and Blue Eyes Plays Ol’ Blue Eyes, but later in the decade, Zentner was diagnosed with leukemia. Admirably, Zentner kept performing up until six months prior to his passing, on January 31, 2000 in Las Vegas. –Artist Biography by Greg Prato

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 00:57:02 minutes | 1,01 GB | Genre: Jazz

Recorded: Sierra Studios in Athens in April 2014

The distinctive cry of Sokratis Sinopoulos’ lyra has previously been heard on ECM recordings of Charles Lloyd/Maria Farantouri (Athens Concert) and Eleni Karaindrou (Trojan Women, The Weeping Meadow, Elegy of the Uprooting, Medea). Sokratis has played a key role in the revival of interest in the lyra in Greece, both in traditional music contexts and in the shaping of new music. To see him in concert for the first time is to marvel at the range of emotion and expression conveyed through the lyra and the power of the sound projected from this small, bowed instrument.

Eight Winds, the debut album of the quartet and Sokratis’s leader debut for ECM, was produced by Manfred Eicher at Sierra Studios in Athens in April 2014. The reflective compositions and yearning ballads on the album cede the central melodic role to the lyra, sensitively supported by the piano of Yann Keerim and the subtle bass and drums of Dimitris Tsekouras and Dimitris Emmanuel. But there is more happening here than a cross-referencing of folk instrument and jazz trio.

“We’re not ‘fusing’ anything,” Sinopolous cautions. “Each of us has acquired and internalized a lot of knowledge and experience of different styles, before approaching the others. The spirit of the recording session, and also with Manfred Eicher’s direction as producer, was very free. In my one recommendation to the other players, the night before the session, I said: ‘Especially in the solos, if you find yourself playing something that could be easily described as ‘jazz’ or ‘folk’ or ‘classical’, then try and avoid it. Without censoring ourselves, let’s find instead the common roots of our improvising’.” One unifying factor is “the basic modality, which we all relate to, because of our backgrounds.” For Sokratis, the “eight winds” of the title could be construed as the musical streams which influence and swirl around the project. “It can be great to follow such winds, or to fly with them, but in this album we did not allow them to disorient us from our musical centre. And if I had to describe a place where we feel at home and try to stand in stillness and just feel the eight winds passing by, that place would be the ‘Aegean Sea’ [see track 5], in which I try to blend in some ancient sounds from the islands. And by the way, the lyra used to be – indeed it still is – one of the characteristic instruments of the Aegean Islands.”
The lyra is popular in Greece in several regions today, “but as a folk instrument it is always playing folk dance music. And for the musicians – especially those of the older generation – no matter how skilled they are, it hasn’t been easy for them to present their music outside its specific social context. But this is changing now, as a new generation searches for new voices for old instruments.”

In terms of his own development, Sokratis says he has learned from all the musical contexts he has found himself in over the years, but amongst recent experiences counts the work with Charles Lloyd as particularly significant. “The chance to work with Charles Lloyd arrived at a time when I felt I’d heard almost everything. I can’t describe how magical it was to be on stage with Charles and the incredible musicians of his quartet, night after night. The feeling of freedom in the music was really important to me, and it was an experience that gave me new ideas for the musical form of Eight Winds.”

In addition to his playing activities Sokratis Sinopoulos has been involved in research and production for the Domnia Samiou Greek Folk Music Association, has worked with the Centre for Asia Minor Studies on diverse projects, and is a lecturer in the Department of Music Science and Art at the Macedonia University of Thessaloniki.

Yann Keerim began playing piano at the age of four and received his diploma in classical music at the age of 16. His compositions have been featured in numerous films and productions. As pianist he has performed with jazz and ‘world music’ artists including Ara Dinkjian, Manos Achalinotopoulos, and Haig Yazdjian.
Dimitris Tsekouras (born 1985 in Athens) comes from a musical family. He played piano, violin, guitar and drums before settling on the bass, which he studied at the Conservatory of Athens.
Dimitris Emmanuel graduated from the Music High School of Pallini, specialized in Greek traditional percussion and Latin percussion. He won the Greek Young Artist Award in 1997 and since then has worked with many group of traditional Greek music and dance companies.

School Days is the jaw-dropping fourth studio album by GRAMMY Award-winning bassist Stanley Clarke. The album features guest musicians including John McLaughlin, George Duke, Milt Holland, Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd and more. It reached #2 on Billboard’s Top Jazz Albums and features the standouts “Quiet Afternoon” and “The Dancer.” School Days highlights Clarke’s riveting compositional skills and irresistible technique. This definitive classic is a favorite among music lovers and bass players.

Every pro electric-bass player and their mothers wore out the grooves of this record when it first came out, trying to cop Clarke’s speedy, thundering, slapped-thumb bass licks. Yet ultimately, it was Clarke’s rapidly developing compositional skills that made this album so listenable and so much fun for the rest of us, then and now. The title track not only contributed a killer riff to the bass vocabulary; it is a cunningly organized piece of music with a well-defined structure. Moreover, Clarke follows his calling card with two tunes that are even more memorable – the sauntering ballad “Quiet Afternoon” and an ebullient, Brazilian percussion-laced number with a good string arrangement and a terrific groove, “The Dancer.” Clarke also brings out the standup bass for a soulful acoustic dialogue with John McLaughlin on “Desert Song.” Evidently enthused by their leader’s material, David Sancious (keyboards) and Raymond Gomez (guitars) deliver some of their best solos on records – and with George Duke on hand on one cut, you hear some preliminary flickerings of Clarke’s ventures into the commercial sphere. But at this point in time, Clarke was triumphantly proving that it was possible to be both good and commercial at the same time.

Bassist Stanley Clarke, guitarist Bireli Lagrène, and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty comprise a trio initially brought together for Ponty’s 50th anniversary all-star concert, now releasing a proper album to document their virtuoso interplay.

The occasion for this trio to work together was a 2010 concert that celebrated violinist Jean-Luc Ponty’s 50th anniversary as a recording artist. Both the violinist and Stanley Clarke had collaborated before (a previous electric trio set with Al Di Meola, the Rite Of Strings was issued in 1995), but neither had collaborated with French jazz guitarist Biréli Lagrène prior to that evening. In playing for a mere 20 minutes, they created the impetus for D-Stringz — though it took two years for them to clear their schedules and get into a Brussels studio. These ten tunes are an assortment of standards and originals. The album is an acoustic, straight-ahead date that employs flawless swinging bop and post-bop, as well as 21st century takes on gypsy and soul-jazz and funk. John Coltrane’s “Blue Train” is offered in cut time. Ponty covers the horn lines while Lagrène plays choppy, meaty chords and Clarke redefines the bass’ role in a walking 12-bar blues. Ponty’s solo offers the right amount of flash and punch, touching on both gypsy and modal jazz traditions. Lagrène syncopates his butt off in the changes. The reading of Joe Zawinul’s Cannonball Adderley vehicle, “Mercy Mercy Mercy,” is a showcase for Lagrène’s gorgeous chord voicings. Ponty’s solo nearly sings, and further, a call-and-response exchange between Clarke and the guitarist — before the latter’s slippery solo — is gritty and tight. In another Coltrane reference, the reading of Jimmy McHugh’s and Harold Adamson’s “Too Old to Go Steady” (that the saxophonist rendered so beaut-fully on Ballads in 1963) offers a lovely conversation between the guitarist and violinist, but it’s Clarke’s counterpoint that steals the show. Given the trio’s collective love of Django Reinhardt, it makes sense they would cover his iconic “Nuages.” Ponty moves it along the ledge by rendering it contemporary; he provides a simmering bossa lilt in the melody. The bassist’s “Bit of Burd” is fleet, driving bebop; everyone is on fire, but Lagrène’s arpeggios are on stun. The guitarist’s “Strech” binds progressive jazz, modernism, post-bop, and gypsy swing. Ponty’s “To and Fro,” built on a four-note riff, allows the trio to really stretch out and get their funk on. In the latter, Clarke’s bassline is fat, woody, and hard-grooving. The closer, “One Take,” is built on a simple two-chord vamp. Loping violin and guitar lines twist, turn, and soar, creating a lithe, breezy, funky feel but Clarke whomps down hard, binding them to the tune’s groove. The sound on D-Stringz is warm and bright, but so pristine, it lends an intimate living room feel to the proceedings. All the playing is relaxed, inquisitive and inventive. D-Stringz is the sound of musical invention and delight put on offer directly. It is a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. –AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

City features a handful of seasoned musicians including McCallum on guitars,Robin Mullarkey, bass (ESKA, Roisin Murphy), Sean Foran(Trichotomy), Rhodes andRichard Spaven (Flying Lotus, José James) drums, synths and electronics. ViolinistEmma Sweeney guests on one track, Trio Seven. The album also features guest vocalists on four tracks, JP Cooper (newly signed to Island Records), Sharlene Hector(Basement Jaxx), Fridolijn Van Polland Sophie Barker (Zero 7).

For his new album, City, McCallum steps even further into the world of electronica, whilst still maintaining that magical combination of both acoustic and electronic instruments that gives his music such a distinctive sound. However, two things make City stand out from his previous work. First, the addition of vocals and second, the decision to bring in London based drummer and producer, Richard Spaven, who he met during his time playing with Cinematic Orchestra, not only to perform, but to co-write and produce the album (all tracks are co-written by McCallum and Spaven apart from City).

Key tracks on the album include the evocative City; sampled extracts of JP Cooper’s ‘Something You Can’t Have’ play like glimpses of a city snatched from a car window. North Star, featuring Sharlene Hector, was written the old fashioned way, after studio computers decided to take an unscheduled rest. Effergy is simply sublime, an ambient meditation with McCallum’s guitar hinting at something darker beneath the surface, with haunting vocal textures by Fridolijn Van Poll, while Said and Done features the otherworldly vocals of Zero 7’s Sophie Barker.

Stuart McCallum‘s music has always thrived in that beautiful space where genres blur. With a wide range of influences from Machinedrum, Lau and Martin Simpson to Debussy, Taylor McFerrin and Burial, it’s not difficult to see how this has come about. His 2011 Naim debut, Distilled, was a series of beautiful instrumental soundscapes and glorious melodies that owed as much to dance music as it did to jazz. Since then he has been busy with a wide range of other projects, including several collaborations with British artist Linder, scoring music for the Northern Ballet and working in an acoustic duo setting with Mike Walker.

Spaven has played with a host of artists, including 4hero, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Flying Lotus, Gregory Porter, José James and Robert Mitchell. His production style lies somewhere between the realms jazz and electronica and subtly bridges the gap between these two worlds using grooves that blend contemporary jazz and bass-heavy downtempo electronics. The melodies and layered harmonies from McCallum’s guitar, as well as synth pads and bass, are all driven by Spaven’s hypnotic grooves and provide the perfect foil for McCallum’s often delicate and captivating sound.

Binaural+ Stereo Recording

Inspired by Paul Simon’s contributions, Alexis Cole offers this very special treatment of his music. With Dazzling Blue, vocalist Cole and producers David Chesky and Nicholas Prout sifted through some of Simon’s lesser known compositions. Herein they are presented in unalloyed simplicity, emphasizing the incandescent quality, and unadorned beauty of his lyrics.

Ms. Cole has a marvelous voice of great depth. Her clear, warm resonance strips away all ornamentation and gets you to the marrow of the songwriter’s stories. The vocals are haunting, and a testament to Cole’s cross-cultural vocal training. Cole is joined by an excellent group of musicians whose collective body of work is well known to roots music aficionados. Jeff Haynes and Gus Courtsunis on percussion; Marvin Sewell on acoustic and electric guitars; Mark Peterson on bass, Julie Harris on Native American flute, and background vocals from Maria Quintanilla and Evan Sundquist; they are all an integral part of the whole.
Part of the Chesky Binaural + Series, all recorded with a single microphone, the band appears right before you with this spacious, lush and multi-dimensional recording. Now headphone users will hear the same three-dimensional sound and imaging as audiophiles have for the past 25 years with Chesky Recordings. Also these new Binaural+ Series albums capture even more spatial realism for the home audiophile market, bringing you one step closer to the actual event. You will hear some of the most natural and pure music ever recorded.

Antonio Carlos Jobim – The Composer Of Desafinado, Plays (1963/2014)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 35:17 minutes | 739MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | Front Cover | © Verve Records
Recorded: A&R Studios, New York, NY, on May 9 and 10, 1963

The Composer of Desafinado, Plays is Antonio Carlos Jobim’s debut album originally released in 1963. The Brazilian musician and composer was known as one of the primary influences behind the creation of the bossa nova musical style. The record features all original compositions, including “The Girl from Ipanema” one of the most widely recorded songs of all time.

In his first American album, Antonio Carlos Jobim presents a dozen of his songs, each one destined to become a standard — an astounding batting average. Jobim, who claimed to have been out of practice at the time of the session, merely plays single notes on the piano with one hand, punctuated by chords now and then, sticking to his long, undulating melodies with a few passages of jazz improvisation now and then. Yet it is a lovely idea, not a gesture is wasted. Arranger Claus Ogerman unveils many of the trademarks that would define his Creed Taylor-produced albums with Jobim — the soaring, dying solo flute and spare, brooding unison string lines widening into lush harmony; flutes doubling on top of Jobim’s piano chords — again with an exquisitely spare touch. The songs include “Desafinado,” “Corcovado,” “Chega de Saudade” (No More Blues), “The Girl From Ipanema,” “Meditation,” “One Note Samba,” and half-a-dozen others (every one of which is included on The Man From Ipanema set). –AllMusic Review by Richard S. The fourth full-length release for the Canadian jazz group features guest appearances from Future Islands’ Samuel T. Herring, Mick Jenkins, Kaytranada, Colin Stetson, and Charlotte Day Wilson.

BADBADBADNOTGOOD is the talented young quartet of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, Alex Sowinski on drums & Leland Whitty on saxophone. They formed and became inseparable friends at Humber College’s Music Performance program in 2011 and have been on a critically acclaimed, rule bending musical journey ever since. BBNG took the music world by storm with their 2014 LP, III, a brash yet refined record of angular jazz improvisations, lush ballads, kraut rock, & futuristic hip-hop tinged rhythms which led to a couple years of touring the world & collaborating with some of the best and brightest artists around the globe
The boys are back with the new album IV, their most impressive and highly anticipated project yet. IV continues their forward thinking progression, sounding something like a jam session in space between Can, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, Weather Report, Arthur Russell & MF DOOM.

With tracks like “Time Moves Slow” featuring haunting vocals from Sam Herring of Future Islands, the syncopated groove of “Lavender,” a collaboration with Montreal based producer Kaytranada, the rumbling fusion build of “Confessions Pt. II” featuring Colin Stetson on the bass sax, “Love” which is highlighted with smokey left field raps from Mick Jenkins & the epic chords of “Speaking Gently,” IV is an exploration in post-genre virtuosity. Out Summer 2016 on Innovative Leisure Records, BBNG prove yet again that the possibilities & discovery in their musical quest are infinite.

Tracklist:
01 – And That, Too.
02 – Speaking Gently

Tony Bennett is joined by pianist Bill Charlap in The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern. Including popular tunes “The Way You Look Tonight”, “I Won’t Dance” and many more!

The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern functions as something of an answer to its predecessor, Cheek to Cheek. That 2014 duet album with Lady Gaga was suitably brassy and snazzy, relying on well-loved standards and pizzazz – the kind of thing designed to stoke nostalgia vibes – but The Silver Lining is a purer jazz record, an intimate songbook collaboration with pianist Bill Charlap; the difference can be heard simply in comparing the versions of “I Won’t Dance” that pop up on the two albums – the Gaga swings boldly, the Charlap rendition carries a wry resignation. Songbooks have been a standard item for Bennett throughout the years but if The Silver Lining recalls any specific album in the vocalist’s discography, it’s The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album, a record released in 1975 when Bennett dropped off the major-label radar and his name was perhaps as well-known to record buyers as that of Evans. While there may be a slight wattage differential between Bennett and Charlap, the difference is due to scale: Bennett is a household name; Charlap is a star among modern mainstream jazz fans. Accordingly, Bennett treats the pianist as an equal, giving him plenty of room to spin out long, liquid solos, passages that seem to glide out imperceptibly from his understated support. Often, The Silver Lining features little more than just the singer and the pianist – when they’re augmented by other musicians, it’s just bass and drums, offering a bit of rhythm and color – and this sparseness never seems austere due to the inherent warmth of the musicians’ easy interplay, not to mention their individual voices. Both aspects are subtly showcased on The Silver Lining, and it’s that delicate dance, where Bennett and Charlap enjoy playing together and apart, that makes this so charming.

Weather Report’s The Legendary Live Tapes features four discs of sensational unreleased performances all “completely, totally, unapologetically and insanely live” recorded by the legendary jazz group from 1978 to 1981. This package uniquely showcases Weather Report’s extensive prowess as a band, opting not to replicate the ebb and flow of a standard Weather Report set at the time, instead offering a uniquely curated experience that captures the dazzling directions the group took at the arguable height of their powers.

These four discs offer completely unreleased performances by the Weather Report lineup of keyboardist Joe Zawinul, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, bassist Jaco Pastorius, drummer Peter Erskine, and a bit later, percussionist Bobby Thomas, Jr. It was compiled for release by Erskine (whose historical essay and annotated track notes are fantastic) and Tony Zawinul, Joe’s son. These are mostly soundboard cassettes made by WR’s longtime live sound engineer Brian Risner, with choice audience tapes and commercial mobile rig selections mixed in. While it (mostly) sounds like an excellent bootleg, the sound here is remarkable given the root sources. Similar to 2002’s Live and Unreleased, the material is not arranged chronologically. Disc one begins with the quintet in 1980/1981; disc four is from the quartet in 1978, and it skips around in between. The sequencing is peculiar to Erskine’s and Zawinul’s personal notions about what best constituted raw evidence of the band’s collective ability on any given night of a tour – warts and all. (An example is the inclusion of an abrupt, incomplete “Jaco’s Solo” on disc one. It’s here as a metaphor for the bassist’s mercurial personality and the gap his absence leaves, but it’s too much of a quirk for most listeners. (Thankfully, there is a full, more inspired version on disc four from 1978.) But the many highlights offset these moments. On disc one, “Brown Street” is taken from a rehearsal vastly overdubbed later for 8:30; the root version is revelatory. The scorching medley of “Badia/Boogie Woogie Waltz” is fiery and intense – tape collectors feel free to compare. Shorter’s brief quote from “What’s Goin’ On” in “The Orphan” reveals how much R&B was part of his playing during this period, and his seven-plus-minute solo spot is magnificent. Disc two offers a gorgeous medley of Pastorius’ “Continuum”/”River People” – played in his hometown of Philly – and is followed by a 21-minute, newly discovered “Gibraltar” from Erskine’s second gig with WR. Disc three by the quintet is from 1980-1981 and contains excellent performances of “Madagascar,” followed by a hard-grooving “Night Passage.” (The latter tune was eventually dropped from public performance.) These tracks – plus two more – are from proper mobile recording equipment and as such they stand out. A spacy bebop reading of Duke Ellington’s “Rockin’ in Rhythm” precedes a ragged “Port of Entry” – the only known version recorded by the quartet (just prior to Thomas’ joining). The final disc offers long, kinetic versions of “Elegant People,” “Scarlet Woman,” and “Black Market,” as well as a raucous “Teen Town” and a spacy, dubby version of “Directions.” While The Legendary Live Tapes, 1978-81 is a glimpse of the complex, multifaceted – and controversial – persona that was WR, it is a long and fruitful one. It showcases the band at their jazz-funk best with improvisational and collective intuitive chops usually on stun. Hopefully there is more where this came from.
