Merzbow, Gustafsson, Pándi, Moore – Cuts Of Guilt, Cuts Deeper (2015)

Cuts of Guilt, Cuts Deeper is the second studio album by the trio of Japanese noise musician Merzbow, Hungarian drummer Balázs Pándi, and Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. It features guest musician Thurston Moore, guitarist in Sonic Youth. The album was chosen as number 20 of 20 Best Avant Albums of 2015 by Rolling Stone.

The Cuts Quartet is a sort of assembled supergroup. But we are not talking Traveling Wilburys or Audioslave here. Groups where the sum is certainly less than the parts. No, the amalgam of Japanese noise artist Merzbow (aka Masami Akita), Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson (Fire! Orchestra, The Thing), American guitarist Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), and Hungarian drummer Balázs Pándi (Metallic Taste of Blood) comes at the ears more like John Coltrane’s Ascension (Impulse!, 1965) or Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz (Atlantic, 1961).

Like those seminal recordings, it is possible to get lost in the four lengthy tracks spread over 2 discs (both LP and CD). Lost, both purposely and unexpectedly.

Noise has been incorporated into improvised music to great effect. Wolf Eyes recorded with Anthony Braxton, and Merzbow has worked with Jamie Saft, Richard Pinhas, and Elliott Sharp, as well as each of the musicians here. The previous trio recording, Cuts (RareNoise, 2013) with Merzbow, Gustafsson and Pándi was a bit of a revelation. Propelling noise with a drummer’s pulse opens new avenues for its reception. By adding Moore’s additional guitar, the road expands into a spacious boulevard. Pándi’s drumming recalls that of Charles Hayward from Massacre or Ted Epstein from Blind Idiot God. He has the ability to draw from micro to the macro, always the impetus here.

It’s not that Gustafsson, Moore, and Akita need assistance. Each player can dominate as a solo performer. It’s just that each player dials back their extroverted nature in service of the music. Gustafsson eschews his luxury liner baritone sax for electronics for lengthy periods, Moore often adopts silence, and Akita’s wall of sound (noise) doesn’t inundate. That said, the music is fierce, passionate, and intense. Like Coltrane’s Ascension or Coleman’s Free Jazz listeners can absorb the whole or focus on a player by following an individual through each piece. That way there is a choice between maelstrom and well, melody.

The 1959 debut by alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman revolutionized the jazz world and quickly earned a reputation as one of the most important and controversial recordings of the era. Credited as a crucial work of early “free jazz,” the album featured a lineup of then up-and-coming jazz stars: trumpeter Don Cherry, pianist Walter Norris, bassist Don Payne, and drummer Billy Higgins.

Coleman would go on to become a titan of 20th Century music–the recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Pulitzer Prize for music. Something Else!!! is simply an essential document of the jazz era–some of the most forward-leaning, progressive music ever put to tape.

This is exciting, courageous music that remains vital today. -Nat Hentoff, music critic

Bandleader Simon Jeffes composed the leadoff track “Music for a Found Harmonium” on a harmonium he found abandoned on a Tokyo street, which offers an inkling of the musical inspiration that sprang from this remarkable Englishman. As usual, he gathers a loose aggregation of musicians who create stunning, free-flowing acoustic sounds that defy categorization. Jeffes includes brass here for the first time on a Penguin Café Orchestra recording. Recorded over three years, the band’s third album is worth the painstaking studio overdubbing by its leader, who died of a brain tumor in 1997.

The story goes that, in 2000, while pianist/vocalist Norah Jones was playing regularly at the Living Room in New York’s Lower East Side and well before she earned eight Grammys, she received an invitation to sing some blues with guitarist Peter Malick and his band. Reluctantly, Jones admitted to a paucity of blues-singing experience. Thankfully, Malick was persistent. Listening to the rootsy, organic beauty evidenced on New York City, you’d never know Jones hadn’t ever sung the blues. Inspired by the classic work of artists such as Ray Charles and Billie Holiday, New York City is a kind of singer/songwriter blues album featuring Jones’ particularly haunting vocal style. It’s more mainstream than Come Away With Me, but fans of that album should cotton easily to Jones’ work here. Conceptualized around the post-9/11 title track, most of Malick’s songs are contemporary blues reminiscent of the work of Bonnie Raitt and Eric Clapton. Notably, “Strange Transmissions,” a melancholy and atmospheric profession of a love that just can’t be denied, showcases Jones as mellow blues diva, while “Heart of Mine” finds the pianist’s breathy style perfectly suited to the Bob Dylan nugget. As for leader Malick, he takes the vocal duties on “Things You Don’t Have to Do” and graces most of the tracks with his thoughtful and tempered guitar sound.

Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks |  @ Blue Note Records

Providing a healthy dose of pianist Bud Powell at his best, this classic album combines sessions recorded in 1949 and 1951 with two different lineups. Trumpeter Fats Navarro and tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins appear on the four tunes Powell recorded with a quintet in 1949. The other four songs, taken from the 1951 session, feature bassist Curly Russell and Max Roach on drums.

Culled from Bud Powell’s first two Amazing Bud Powell volumes, this LP features eight highlights from the bop pianist’s inspired 1949-1951 run at Blue Note. Complementing earlier triumphs for Verve, Powell displays his frenetically inspired keyboard approach on the self-penned classics “Wail,” “Bouncing With Bud,” and “Un Poco Loco”; he sounds equally fresh tackling such venerable covers as “Over the Rainbow,” Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia,” and Charlie Parker’s “Ornithology.” And while such omissions as “Dance of the Infidels” and “Parisian Thoroughfare” are hard not to miss, there’s enough here to keep newcomers busy until they inevitably pick up the complete Blue Note set. Plus, one gets a chance to hear the likes of Fats Navarro, Sonny Rollins, and Max Roach in top form. An essential slice of bebop.

Evolution was the first album released by trombonist Grachan Moncur III, and is an incredible debut of a talented free-jazz musician. The Allmusic review by Steve Huey awarded the album 4½ stars out of 5 and stated “With such an inventive debut, it’s a shame Moncur didn’t record more as a leader, which makes Evolution an even more important item for fans of Blue Note’s avant-garde to track down”.

“In preparing these hi def remasters, we were very conscientious about maintaining the feel of the original releases while adding a previously unattainable transparency and depth. It now sounds like you’ve set up your chaise lounge right in the middle of Rudy Van Gelder’s studio!” – Blue Note President, Don Was.

At the intersection of classical music and jazz, the French composer and pianist Jean-Christophe Cholet is a master in making small intense parts, without artifice. Whispers on it revives Matthieu Michel, his partner of 20 years, to put together the foundations of a hushed but profound dialogue as a long continuous breath.

Recorded at La Buissonne, this new album puts essentiality search light of the duo immersed in an atmosphere of rare serenity. Guided by the producer Gerard de Haro, Jean-Christophe Cholet and Matthieu Michel Whispers draped in a deep black silk greenery which blends light exchanges and dramatic dives, taking care to rule out demonstrative virtuosity. The complementary duo shows evidence of collaboration, able to dress the space with little notes, without ever giving way to a feeling of emptiness.

Invited to share this unique moment, Ramon Lopez (drums) and Didier Ithursarry (accordion) complement the compositions of the duo without disfiguring. The original breath two a new dimension to three or four. An ease in the interaction between the musicians that proves how this Whispers has been designed in the best way: a search count and simplicity, opening the way to the fluid expression of deeply personal songs and live.

Introducing The 3 Sounds is the debut album by the acclaimed jazz trio. The album was very well-received, garnering them fans such as Horace Silver, Sonny Sitt, Miles Davis, and Cannonball Adderley. It is an excellent introductory album for the trio’s music, and is one of the many gems in their much-lauded discography.

Recorded: July 2011, Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizerra, Lugano

UK saxophonist Andy Sheppard’s second ECM album introduces his freely lyrical new trio with Michel Benita and Sebastian Rochford. All three players share a sense of stylistic open-mindedness. Drummer Rochford is one of the young players changing perceptions of British jazz with bands Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland. Algiers-born French bassist Benita, who cites Charlie Haden and Scott LaFaro as influences, has played with Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz and in the ELB trio with Nguyên Lê and Peter Erskine. Repertoire here includes originals by Sheppard, Benita and Rochford, plus group improvisations and the standard “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows.” In all contexts, interaction is highly creative, as Benita and Rochford respond perceptively to Sheppard’s melodically and rhythmically inventive lines. Recorded July 2011 at Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizzera, Lugano.

The self-titled debut recording by Trio Libero features the acoustic collective of saxophonist Andy Sheppard, bassist Michel Benita, and drummer Sebastian Rochford. The group’s name comes from a concept as stated by Sheppard: “Improvise, write it down, develop it, then replay it with fresh improvisation: a trio libero.” This is how 12 of the set’s 13 tunes were created; some of them were initially recorded during a four-day improv session in 2009 and redone for this recording, while other ideas are brand-new. Trio Libero reveals a truly adventurous group playing melodically improvised tunes that feel like formal, complete compositions; yet they move so much in their brief time frame — all but one tune here is between three and five minutes — they cannot be anything but. This set uses sometimes the smallest of sonic fragments to weave into emotionally resonant and musically sophisticated statements. On “Slip Duty,” where a seemingly haphazard mercurial head by Sheppard and Benita unfolds and disappears almost immediately, Rochford’s drums break less than a minute in, and start shifting time frames and phrasing. When Sheppard and Benita return, they have moved into a harmonic exploration of the various rhythmic patterns stated by Rochford. “Dia da Libertade” begins with a bass solo, stating fragments that become a theme before the rest of the trio enters. Sheppard uses three low-register notes on tenor, before taking it up the horn and playing right at the bass notes, while Rochford colors it with gorgeous cymbals. The two parts of “Spacewalk” are tender, almost hesitant, due to Sheppard’s long notes and the bowed bass of Benita. They’re mournful but hardly sad; on the second part, Sheppard moves to his high register and manages to wrench the most emotion from a precious few carefully placed notes. All the while, Rochford is playing his own inner-logic rhythms that add another layer of lyricism. The lone standard here, “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows,” while unmistakable with Sheppard on soprano, is also stretched to fit the group’s aesthetic. Closer “When We Live on the Stars…” carries within it a ghostly familiar yet otherworldly original lyrical line that could be an extrapolation of a timeless pop tune. The way Benita and Rochford sparingly and intuitively illustrate his melody creates a collective shimmering effect. As a label, ECM is no stranger to fine melodic improvisation from groups — Jan Garbarek’s more folkish and modal brand immediately comes to mind. However, the short, taut execution in each track by Trio Libero on this deceptively active offering points to a new model, one whose focus is finding new ways to illustrate — via restraint — seemingly soft ambiguous sounds as lyric possibilities. They succeed in spades. –AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

Drummer Tony Williams died suddenly, and tragically, in early 1997. His death struck hard, eliminating one of jazz rhythm’s sharpest innovators since the 1950s. Williams first made his brilliance clear in the second great Miles Davis Quintet of the early 1960s. He whirled like mad later, especially with his own jazz-rock fusion trio Lifetime. In between, he created rhythmic vapor trails behind Miles and increased the wobbly rhythmic ratio with artists like Eric Dolphy. Sadly, in Young at Heart, we have his final recording. With Mulgrew Miller and Ira Coleman, Williams sounds as complex and hitting as ever. The tunes vary from standards (“On Green Dolphin Street” is the best here) to Williams’s own tunes. Perhaps in honor of Williams, it sounds like the producer of Young miked Williams so he sounded louder, sometimes even domineering. But he was undoubtedly superb, and he mixes well with an unusually tough-toned Miller on the keys. This is a historic session, because it is Sony’s 1st commercially released DSD recording, made in Tokyo in September 1996.

This would be the drummer’s last recording, cut six months before he died. It shows Williams in a more conciliatory mood, sublimating his huge chops and bombastic style for subtler shadings and support for pianist Mulgrew Miller and bassist Ira Coleman, while lessening none of his indefatigable swing. This was also the last band Williams toured with, indicating he was committed to and comfortable with the acoustic piano-bass-drums format. It’s a setting he had never really fully exploited over his years of leadership, no doubt inspired by the Herbie Hancock-Ron Carter partnership within the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-’60s. On the six standards present, Miller shines like a million facet diamond, his ultra-bright ideas swimming happily in this cauldron of crackling rhythms. The pianist peculiarly reharmonizes — perhaps even shifts keys — on six bars of the first line of the ballad “Body and Soul” and hits the kicker, his composition “Promethean,” hard and strong, ripping off boppish melodic and harmonic phrases as if child’s play. Williams trades fours on “Promethean” and the bass-led feature for Coleman during “You and the Night and the Music”; he also busts out with his typical triplet and quadruplet fury for the solidly swinging, slightly reharmonized “On Green Dolphin Street.” The trio also recapitulates the previously larger-ensemble Williams original “Neptune” in a more pensive, poised, Aquarian mode than the caravan processional of the earlier recording. Miller’s extraordinary modal chord extrapolations at the end are stunningly beautiful. Although this might not be viewed by fans as typical of Tony Williams, it is a logical conclusion to a brilliant career in jazz, and holds up high the lofty improvisational values he kept close to his vest, but near to our hearts. Recommended.

Some jazz purists would say that Wayne Shorter went downhill in the 1970s, when he passionately embraced electric jazz-fusion and co-led the innovative Weather Report with Joe Zawinul. But remember: Those are the same people who also claim that Miles Davis’ stunning Bitches Brew has no value and that Chick Corea’s visionary Return to Forever was a complete waste — so it’s hard to take their opinions seriously. The fact is that the 1970s were a highly productive time for Shorter, and it wasn’t until the 1980s that the tenor and soprano saxophonist really declined creatively. One of Shorter’s best-selling albums from the 1970s was Native Dancer, a Brazilian-oriented jazz-fusion masterpiece that boasts Herbie Hancock on acoustic piano and electric keyboards, and employs such Brazilian talent as singer Milton Nascimento (a superstar in Brazil) and percussionist Airto Moreira. Everything on this melodic, consistently lyrical effort is a jewel, and that includes Hancock’s “Joanna’s Theme” as well as pieces by Nascimento (“From the Lonely Afternoons,” “Ponta de Areia,” “Tarde,” “Lilia,” and “Miracle of the Fishes”) and by Shorter himself (“Ana Maria,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Diana”). Reissued on SACD, Native Dancer is clearly among Shorter’s most essential albums.

Called “one of the great voices of today”, Alexis Cole has been compared to classic jazz singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Anita O’Day. Her luxurious voice and innovative interpretations make her an instant favorite with audiences of all ages. Cole is the recipient of a Swing Journal Gold Disk award, and has won the NY Jazzmobile and Montreux Jazz Festival vocal competitions…

This time out, Alexis Cole goes further back in time with her quartet of guitarist Saul Rubin, saxophonist/clarinetist Dan Block, bassist Pat O’Leary and drummer Phil Stewart to a more genteel time when sheet music was the most common method of dissemination of popular tunes. With her relaxed style, clear articulation, unhurried, conversational approach and allknowing sense of cool, Cole and her crew strike a swinging accord on nuggets like “Ain’t We Got Fun,” “Bimini Bay,” “Whippoorwill,” the buoyantly swinging title track and ten other tunes from yesteryear in this engaging retro revue. Everything goes down nice ‘n’ easy on this luxurious outing, and Alexis delivers with timeless charm from track to track.

Part of the Chesky Binaural + Series, all recorded with a single microphone, the band and singer appear right before you with this spacious, lush and multidimensional recording. You will hear some of the most natural and pure vocals ever recorded of a jazz singer.

Cuban pianist and composer Alfredo Rodríguez explores his memories of Cuba, the people and the culture he left behind and finds his new place on this release, co-produced by Rodríguez’s champion and mentor, Quincy Jones. Featuring a superb ensemble that includes bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding, The Invasion Parade contains nine tracks including originals by Rodríguez as well as evergreens such as Guantanamera.

“When you live in your own country, you are immersed in that reality and you’re not necessarily conscious of all the different elements that make it what it is. I breathed Cuban music. Being outside that reality gives me a different perspective. Creating and playing this music has been like finding out who I am, all over again.” –Alfredo Rodríguez

The title of Cuban expatriate jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez’s sophomore offering for Mack Avenue Records is inspired by an annual parade in the island city of Santiago that celebrates the nation’s independence. On the follow-up to 2011’s Sounds of Space, Rodriguez delves deeply into the sounds of his native land with an incendiary approach. Co-produced with Quincy Jones, his lineup for the set includes saxophonists Billy Carrion and Román Filiú, drummer/percussionist Henry Cole, vocalist/percussionist Pedrito Martinez, flutist Javier Porta, and alternating bassists Peter Slavov and Esperanza Spalding. Rodriguez is an exceptionally gifted pianist and arranger, and he delved deep into Cuba’s vast musical variety from guajiro to Yoruban Santeria music, comparsas, timba, Caribbean folk, and, of course, Afro-Cuban jazz, and wound in a thoroughly modern, utterly enchanting mix of originals, folk songs, and classics. Standouts include his bold, dissonant, nearly political reading of “Guantanamera,” the lithe “A Santa Bárbara,” mold-breaking readings of standards such as “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás” and “Veinte Años” with bold rhythmic and harmonic extrapolations, and “Timberobot,” a tough workout with flying arpeggios. –AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

Certainly one of the most important sessions in Pepper’s entire recording career, if not the history of jazz, this classic 1959 recording features the legendary sax player backed by an astounding big band that includes drummer Mel Lewis and alto sax icon Bud Shank. The album features brilliant arrangements by Marty Paich (who would later orchestrate for artists like Carly Simon and Elton John).

This is a true classic. Altoist Art Pepper is joined by an 11-piece band playing Marty Paich arrangements of a dozen jazz standards from the bop and cool jazz era. Trumpeter Jack Sheldon has a few solos, but the focus is very much on the altoist who is in peak form for this period. The reissue adds two additional versions of “Walkin’” and one of “Donna Lee” to the original program. Throughout, Pepper sounds quite inspired by Paich’s charts which feature the band as an active part of the music rather than just in the background. Highlights of this highly enjoyable set include “Move,” “Four Brothers,” “Shaw Nuff,” “Anthropology,” and “Donna Lee,” but there is not a single throwaway track to be heard. Essential music for all serious jazz collections.

Astor Piazzolla – Cierra tus ojos – Daniel Mille (2014)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 00:55:30 minutes | 990 MB | Genre: Jazz
